No. 11 Florida State Shuts out Longwood, 6-0

LONGWOOD, Fla, — The Lancers opened their weekend at The Spring Games against No. 11 Florida State( 13-6) . The Seminoles used a shut out pitching performance from Kathryn Sandercock and late-inning offense to defeat Longwood (5-10), 6-0. 

Florida State's Kathryn Sandercock delivered 6.0 innings of work for the Seminoles and only allowed the Lancer offense one hit in the sixth inning, a double off the bat of Leah Powell, her second double of the season. 

The Lancers tabbed Sydney Backstrom for her 10th start of the 2020 season as Backstrom allowed four hits and one run over 3.0 inning of work in the circle for the Lancers before Arleigh Wood replaced Backstrom at the top of the fourth. 

In the fourth inning, a home run off the bat of FSU's Kaia LoPreste opened the scoring for the Seminoles as Florida State went on to score four runs on three hits in the inning, extending their lead to 5-0 over the Lancers. 

Florida State added a run in the top of the sixth as the Seminoles went on to defeat the Lancers 6-0 to open The Spring Games at Boombah-Soldiers Creek Park. 

Backstrom (4-6) is credited with the loss as the trio of Backstrom, Wood, and Angelina Sherba were in the circle for the Lancers. The group combined to allow four hits and six runs while striking out three Seminoles in the loss. 

FSU's Kathryn Sandercock improved to 7-1 on the season with an ERA of 2.22 after allowing 0 runs and one hit in 6.0 innings of work. Brianne Enter pitched the final inning for the Seminoles to close out the game. 

The loss is third-straight for the Lancers as Longwood is nearing the end of a 20 game road stretch to open the season. Longwood drops to 5-10 on the year with four games remaining in the Sunshine State before returning back to Lancer Field for the home-opener against Rhode Island. 

Longwood now prepares for four games in two days with Niagara University, the first team on the docket for the Lancers. Longwood and Niagara are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m., and then the Lancers will stay on the diamond with a 6:30 p.m. start time against Valparaiso University to conclude day two of The Spring Games.
