Lancers Set for The Spring Games

Last Time Out
• Longwood finished the UCF Invitational 2-3 with victories against Columbia and Long Island University.
• Junior Leah Powell delivered for Longwood offensively against Columbia as Powell finished with a team-best two hits and one RBI in the Lancer win.
• The Lancers and now ranked No. 22 The University of Central Florida found themselves in not one but two pitching duels, with the Knights coming out on top in both games, 3-1, and 2-0.
• The bats came alive against Long Island as Sydney Jacobsen, Madison Blair, Kasey Carr recorded two hits, with Carr driving in two RBI's for the Lancers.
• Longwood tabbed junior Sydney Backstrom for four starts, and one relief appearance in the Invitational and Backstrom did not disappoint. The preseason Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year delivered 28.0 innings of work in the circle for the Lancers, only allowing eight runs and 18 hits while striking out 16 batters.
• Freshman Kelly Park made a name for herself against now ranked No. 22 The University of Central Florida. Park went 2-of-3 from the plate against the Knights in the finale of the UCF Invitational.

Longwood looks to get back to the NCAA Regionals in 2020, as the Lancers look to win their sixth Big South Championship in eight seasons.

Longwood's 2020 slate will pit the five-time Big South Champion Lancers against a stacked non-conference gauntlet that includes four conference champions, six NCAA Regional qualifiers, and one opponent who participated in the Women's College World Series. On the schedule in 2020 consists of College World Series contender, the University of Florida, along with ACC power-houses, Florida State, Duke, University of North Carolina, and Virginia Tech. NCAA Region- al qualifiers, North Dakota State. Florida A&M, and James Madison and South East Louisiana also appear on the docket for the Lancers.

For the fifth straight season, Longwood was tabbed to win the Big South. Despite capturing five Big South Championships in its seven previous seasons.

Youth is the center of Longwood's offensive success early in the season. Sophomore Sydney Jacobsen and Freshman Lauren Taylor have combined for 22 hits through nine games, with Jacobsen re- cording a team-best 14 hits.

Sophomore Sydney Jacobsen leads Longwood with a .368 batting average, with a team-best 14 hits and six RBIs.

The Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Sydney Backstrom leads Longwood with 43 strikeouts in 54.2 innings in the circle for the Lancers. Backstrom captured her first victory of the 2020 season on opening day, pitching 8.0 innings for the complete game, striking out 13 batters in the process.

Senior Kasey Carr is third in fielding double-plays in the Big South as the senior shortstop has turned six double-plays for the Lancers in 14 contests. First baseman Madison Blair has been on the receiving end of three of Carr's double-plays.

Newcomer Lauren Taylor leads the Lancer offense with the longest on-base- streak of the season. Taylor reached base in eight straight contests for the Lancers. Sydney Jacobsen has the longest active streak for Longwood at six games.

Longwood has swept 25 of the three- game series it has played among conference foes while accumulating a 122-39 (.758) regular-season record since join- ing the Big South.

The Lancers have won 44 of their 52 series against Big South conference opponents since joining the league.
   Weekend schedule

Longwood opens The Spring Games with a bang against No. 12 Florida State. The Lancers then play two games the following day against Niagara and Valparaiso University.

The Lancers conclude the weekend on Sun- day against Creighton and Bethune-Cook- man with their fifth game in three days.

Longwood and Florida State have not competed against each other on the diamond, but the Seminoles are a combined 24-2 against Big South Conference members.

CassidyDavis leads Florida State with five home runs in 2020, while Kiersten Landers has recorded the most hits for the Seminoles with 19 in 57 plate appearances (.348).

Caylan Arnold has 47.1 innings of work in the circle for the Seminoles. Arnold is 4-2 on the year with three complete games and an ERA of 1.18.

Leading Valparaiso's offense is Taylor Tonoian with a team-best .308 batting average and 12 hits. Lauren Kehlenbrink has done the most damage with runners in scoring position with 17 RBIs.

In the circle, Kelsie Packard leads the team in innings pitched (41.2) and strikeouts (49). Packard is 3-3 on the year with an ERA of 2.35.
