Shabooty Phillips, whose overcame a challenging upbringing in Houston, Texas, thanks to the game of basketball and his relationship with Longwood head coach
Griff Aldrich.
Phillips and Aldrich first met when Phillips was 12 years old at The Forge, a Christian-based ministry in Houston's Third Ward that provides, among its many missions, a sports-based haven for youth in the area. Phillips was among many who flocked to The Forge for the opportunity to play basketball, and it was there that he crossed paths with Aldrich. In the decade since, the bond that began between the two on the court has evolved into a mentor-mentee relationship whose impact has been equal on both.
