Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood opens up a four-game homestand with a midweek game against NC Central before beginning conference play against Radford.
  • The Lancers have played NC Central 21 times and hold a 13-8 record against the Eagles.
  • The Lancer offense ranks third in the Big South with 78 runs scored, 139 base hits and 72 RBI. The team averages 8.7 hits per game and has had seven games with at least 10 hits.
  • Cullan Wadsworth has a team-best 15 runs scored, good for third in the Big South.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. Sixteen games into 2020, Longwood is second in the Big South with 152 strikeouts while leading the league with 10.06 strikeouts per game. In 2019, the Lancers were fourth with 411 and third with 468 K's in 2018.In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts, breaking the school's D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.

By The Numbers
  • Longwood has racked up double digit hits seven times total in 2020. In 2019, the team didn't notch at least 10 hits until its 13th game.  The Lancers have put up 15 hits twice and scored more than 10 runs twice. 
  • Longwood's offense has been one of the top offenses in the Big South early in 2020. The team's .260 team batting average is fourth in the Big South, and the 78 runs scored rank third. The team is third in total hits with 139. Likewise, the Lancers are third in RBI with 72.
  • Longwood already has 36 extra-base hits through 16 games after only recording 32 in 16 games in 2019.
  • Four players have a triple in 2020, with Cullan Wadsworth hitting a team-best three triples. 
  • The Lancers are second in the Big South with six triples and have had two games with two triples this season.
  • Wadsworth and Antwaun Tucker each hit triples on opening day, and Wadsworth and Hunter Gilliam knocked out triples against Binghamton on February 28.
  • Prior to 2020, Longwood hadn't had two triples in a game since April 14, 2018 against UNC Asheville.
  • Tucker has 13 career triples and is now tied for fourth all time with Rhett Pfitzner '97. Scott Hueston '97 is the all-time triples leader with 20.
  • Freshman right-hander Dominick D'Ercole dominated his fourth collegiate start. He struck out 10 over five innings against Ball State on March 8 to be the first Longwood pitcher with 10 or more strikeouts since Tyler Morgan did so against High Point on April 13, 2019.
  • D'Ercole only surrendered four base runners in the outing and did not allow a base hit until the fifth inning. He induced 20 swings and misses in 85 pitches while recording eight of his career-best 10 strikeouts as swinging strikeouts.
  • Longwood sits second in the Big South with 152 total strikeouts while leading the league in strikeouts per nine innings with 10.06.

Last Time Out
  • Dominick D'Ercole was electric for five innings, but Ball State's offense broke out in the sixth inning to down Longwood 8-1. D'Ercole struck out 10 while only surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk and didn't allow a hit through his first four innings in a tough luck loss.
Scouting NC Central
  • Longwood and NC Central meet for the first time in 2020 and third straight year. NC Central won the lone meeting between the two teams in 2019, 9-6. The two were scheduled to play in Farmville, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
  • NC Central comes in having won four of its past eight after opening the season 1-7. Over the weekend, the team took the series opener against Youngstown State 6-5 before falling 3-1 and 8-7 in the final two games of the series. On the season, NC Central has gone 1-4 in games decided by one or two runs.
  • The Eagles have already played three other Big South opponents. They were swept by Radford in a three-game series to open the season, and they are 1-1 against High Point in two high-scoring games while also knocking off Presbyterian 4-1.
  • Luis DeLeon leads the way on offense for NC Central with a .397 batting average, 23 RBI, 23 hits, four home runs, six doubles, eight walks and six stolen bases. Outside of triples, he leads his team in every major offensive category. He had a 13-game hitting streak snapped in the middle game of the Youngstown State series, and he has had eight multi-hit games this season and eight multi-RBI games this season. 
  • Vinny Bailey and Jordan Varela-Payne also have hit a pair of home runs for an NC Central team that has swatted 11 in 16 games. Bailey is second on the team with 11 RBI to go wtih a .345 batting average. 
  • Out of the bullpen, Brendan Bell has been one of top relievers on the team, tying for the team lead with eight appearances and only surrendering two earned runs, nine runs total, on 10 hits while striking out 12 against three walks in 11.1 innings for a 1.59 ERA.
  • Scott Meylan has also made eight appearances, all in relief, and he has struck out 21 in 14.2 innings while walking eight and giving up eight runs, five earned, on 10 hits for a 3.07 ERA. 
  • Among starters, Ryan Miller and Shane Davis have each started in each of their four appearances, with Miller striking out a team-best 36 batters. 
  • Projected starter Zach Zedalis has worked out of the bullpen in all six of his appearances this season. He has seven strikeouts to seven hits and five walks while surrendering six runs, all earned, in 6.0 innings. He has only surrendered runs in two of his six outings, giving up two to Radford and four to High Point.
