NJIT Opens Series With Pitching Gem Against Lancers

Highlanders One-Hit Longwood, Win 13-0

FARMVILLE, Va. – Tyler Stafflinger and the New Jersey Institute of Technology pitching staff stole the show on Friday afternoon against Longwood. The staff one-hit a Longwood offense that came in averaging nearly nine hits per game, and the Highlander offense backed it up with 13 runs to take down the Lancers 13-0.

NJIT senior starter Tyler Stafflinger (1-0) gave up a leadoff single to Antwaun Tucker on his first pitch, but he buckled down and kept the Lancer offense off balance for the rest of his five innings. He only allowed three total baserunners while striking out four and walking one.

From that point on, NJIT relievers Parker O'Neil, Alex DiBona and Bryce Short combined for four scoreless, hitless innings.

The Lancer pitching staff piled up 17 strikeouts, but NJIT answered with 12 hits and nine walks drawn to score runs in seven straight innings from the second through the eighth. Andrew Elcock jumpstarted the offense with three hits, four RBI and a run scored. He was one of four Highlanders with multiple hits in the game, with David Marcano, Dante Bozzuti and Jared Donnelly each having two hits.

Donnelly doubled home NJIT's first run in the second inning, and Marcano added an RBI single that put Stafflinger in control.

For Longwood, freshman starter Dominick D'Ercole (0-2) was tagged with the loss despite a career best seven strikeouts in his second collegiate start. He gave up five runs on four hits and four walks in 2.2 innings.

Game two of the three-game series is set for Saturday at Buddy Bolding Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
