Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood comes back home to host NJIT in a three-game series after its first road test of the season.
  • The Lancers haven't played NJIT since a four-game set in 2007. 
  • Longwood put up 15 hits twice in four games against Purdue Fort Wayne on opening weekend. 
  • Longwood has its first three weekend series at home, the first time it has done so under Coach Mau and first time since 2013 when it hosted Fairfield, Buffalo and Canisius on consecutive weekends.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. Five games deep into 2020, Longwood is third in the Big South with 42 strikeouts. In 2019, the Lancers were fourth with 411 and third with 468 K's in 2018.In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts, breaking the school's D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's.
By The Numbers
  • Longwood has racked up 15 hits two times in 2020 after only recording at least 15 hits once in 2019. The team put up 15 hits in the season opener against Purdue Fort Wayne and followed it up with 15 more hits in the series finale. 
  • Longwood scored 11 runs in the series finale with Purdue Fort Wayne, a season-high. The Lancers also stole six bases, a season high. The last time Longwood stole at least six bases in a game was against UNC Asheville on March 31, 2019.
  • Longwood picked up a pair of triples on opening weekend, with Cullan Wadsworth and Antwaun Tucker each hitting triples on opening day. 
  • Longwood hadn't had two triples in a game since April 14, 2018 against UNC Asheville.
  • For Tucker, the triple is the 13th of his Longwood career. He is now tied for fourth all time with Rhett Pfitzner '97. Scott Hueston '97 is the all-time triples leader with 20.
  • Longwood is third in the Big South with seven steals on the season. The Lancers are also second in steal efficiency after going 7 for 9 on stolen base attempts.
  • Antwaun Tucker is tied for first in the Big South and leads Longwood with three stolen bases. He is one of four players with a stolen bag. 
  • Tucker has only been caught stealing nine times in his Longwood career. The senior is 52-61 on steal attempts as a Lancer.
  • Jack Schnell picked up where he left off in 2019 after closing his sophomore season on a tear. The junior leads Longwood with a .412 batting average and is tied for 2nd in the Big South with six RBI to go with two doubles. 
  • Andrew Gorham had a monster opening weekend in his first series as a Lancer. The junior college transfer tied Jack Schnell with a team-high six hits and is tied with Schnell with a team-best .412 batting average. He is also tied for third with three RBI and had two multi-hit games.
  • Dillon Champagne recorded a hit in each of his first four games after transferring to Longwood. The sophomore holds a .364 average with a pair of runs scored.
  • Ricky Jimenez keyed the team's 11-8 win over Purdue Fort Wayne with Longwood's first 4-hit day of 2020. He went 4-5, 2 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI.
Last Time Out
  • Longwood gave 13th ranked NC State a battle on Tuesday and limited the Wolfpack to six hits, none after the fourth inning, but runs in the first four innings pushed NC State past Longwood 6-1.
  • Jack Schnell knocked in his team-leading sixth run of the season as Longwood put up five hits.
  • Relievers Aidan McEvoy, Maceo Campbell, Andrew Melnyk and Josh Longabaugh each had a scoreless inning of relief for Longwood.
Scouting NJIT
  • Longwood and NJIT will meet for the first time since 2007, when the two teams played four times for the only other meetings in team history. Longwood won all four games.
  • NJIT comes in after playing four games over opening weekend. NJIT played a pair of extra inning games, losing to Monmouth 4-3 in 12 innings on opening day before taking down Bucknell on Sunday February 16 8-5 in 10 innings. In between, NJIT split a doubleheader with Penn State, taking game one 4-2 before falling 6-4 in game two. All four games took place in Cary, N.C.
  • In 2019, NJIT went 17-27-1 overall and 7-17 in the Atlantic Sun.
  • Through four games, Julio Marcano leads the way on offense with a team-best .400 batting average and .500 on-base percentage. Marcano has one of the team's two home runs and is tied for the team lead with four hits.
  • Nick Hussey has driven in a team-best 7 RBI, with no one else having hit home more than 3, to go with a home run and three singles and a .364 batting average. His three-run home run pushed the team past Bucknell 8-5 on Sunday.
  • On the pitching staff, Tyler Stafflinger is tied for the team lead with 5 strikeouts, all coming in his only appearance of the season. Stafflinger went 5.0 innings while surrendering three runs, all earned, on four hits and a walk.
  • Grant Vurpillat went 3.0 innings in his first appearance, a start, of the season. He struck out one and walked four while only allowing one run, unearned, on one hit.
  • Out of the bullpen, Brady Bash is tied for the team lead with 5 strikeouts in a 3.0 inning stint where he surrendered two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk.
  • Ryan Fischer has the longest relief outing on the team with a 5.0 effort in his lone appearance, and he did not surrender a run while striking out two and walking one.
