DOVER, De. – The Longwood women's lacrosse offense broke out Monday afternoon to the tune of 22 goals, as the Lancers defeated Delaware State 22-4 at Memorial Hall.
Â
Four different Lancers tallied at least four goals, led by sophomore
Haley Moomau's career-high five scores. In total, six different Lancers scored multiple goals, with seven Longwood players getting on the score sheet as the Lancers outshot the Hornets 39-12 in a dominant offensive showing.
"Today's win was a great team effort," said head coach
Elaine Jones. "We did a much better job attacking and getting the draw. Also, our defense was solid and we had multiple players who contributed on offense, most notably
Haley Moomau, who led the scoring charge today. Â
"We still have a variety of areas to continue to improve on as we prepare for our next game, but it was nice to earn our first win of the season."
Â
Emma Johnson,
Kaitlin Luccarelli, and
Dana Joss all notched four goals for Longwood (1-1), while
Lexi Davis and
Molly Barkman each added a pair of their own. The 22 team goals match their season high from a season ago when they scored 22 against Presbyterian on April 20, 2019 in a 22-9 victory to close out the regular season.
Â
Luccarelli and Joss remain tied for the Lancer lead in goals with six apiece in the young season.
Lexi Davis notched three more assists against Delaware State (0-2) to raise her total to a team-high five assists—the senior has now amassed 79 setups in her career at Longwood.
Â
The Longwood defense, led by
Claire Libby,
Olivia Zubillaga,
Jordan Howard, and
Corri Calandra, was able to hold the Hornets to just eight shots on goal in the game, while causing six turnovers and securing 16 ground balls.
Laura O'Toole earned the win in goal, making two saves while allowing just three goals. Sophomore
Danielle Burke played the final 30 minutes in goal for the Lancers, notching two saves on three shots on goal.
Â
Longwood got off to a fast start, notching the first two goals of the game in the opening five minutes. Moomau broke the ice when she buried a free-position shot before freshman
Kaylen Karnes scored for the second-straight game off a feed from Luccarelli to give the Lancers an early 2-0 advantage.
Â
After Hornet attacker Gwenna Gentle scored her third goal of the season to cut the Longwood lead to 3-2, the Lancers responded with a 7-0 scoring run over the next 16:13 to take a commanding 10-2 lead—they entered the half up 10-3 after a late Delaware State goal.
Â
In the second half, Longwood surrounded just one goal as they outscored the Hornets 12-1 over the final 30 minutes while outshooting their opponent 15-4. Four different Lancers notched multiple tallies in the second half alone, as the Longwood offense overwhelmed the Hornet defense all afternoon.
Â
The Lancers return to Farmville on Saturday, Feb. 22 for their second home game of the season when they take on American. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
