FARMVILLE, Va. - From the opening tip to the final whistle, this game was all Lancers.
The Longwood women's field hockey team defeated Merrimack 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field. The victory brought Longwood's (2-2) record back to .500 as they continue to navigate their strong out of conference schedule. Three different Lancers tallied goals, which would be more than enough offense for
Katie Wyman who kept the Warriors (0-3) out of the net for her second shutout of the season.
"It was a solid performance all-around," said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. "The first two quarters in particular were the best that we have played all year. I'm happy with the performance—to keep a clean sheet was good. Merrimack is a tough team to battle and they are not going to give up on you, so to play the way that we did was good."
A two-time All-MAC performer, Wyman's seven-save shutout was the 11
th of her impressive career. She did so playing behind a strong backline of
Lea Van Luvender,
Rio Weber, and
Clara Meschini, who helped hold Merrimack to 11 total shots.
Today's performance was the second time this season where at least three different players from a balanced Lancer attack recorded goals, as
Karly Harwood (2),
Luna Lopez (2), and
Olivia Wawrzyniak (3) all tallied scores in the game. Junior midfielder
Charlotte Wilm added two assists for Longwood.
"We just came out and played really hard today, especially in that first half" said Harwood, whose first quarter goal gave the Lancers a lead they would never relinquish. "Coming off of that loss last week, we wanted to come out hard with our foot on the gas and we definitely did that with two goals in the first half. We are just a hardworking team, and we are realizing what it takes to keep working hard, keep getting these goals, and keep winning, and we plan on doing Sunday as well."
Harwood broke the ice in the first quarter after Wilm was able to dribble the ball to the front of the net before Harwood got her stick on it to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. Wilm notched her second assist of the contest when she played a nice feed to the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year Lopez, who fired it home to give Longwood a 2-0 lead going into the half.
The Lancers scored again in the third period after a perfect pass from Lopez led to a one-on-one opportunity for Wawrzyniak, who ripped a shot passed Warrior keeper Katharina Ohmen to bring the score to 3-0 where it would remain.
Longwood has another home game on Sunday, as they are set to take on Davidson in Farmville, Va. The game will start at 12 p.m.
