FARMVILLE, Va. – After helping power Longwood to a 16-15 Big South win over rival Radford, Longwood redshirt freshman
Taylor Blenckstone was named Big South Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Â
A 5-9 attacker from Hagerstown, Md., Blenckstone was the fulcrum of Longwood's offense this past Saturday, amassing seven points and five assists – both matching career highs – to help the Lancers top the Highlanders at Elizabeth Burger Jackson. Blenckstone dished assists to four different players, including on fellow attacker
Kaitlin Luccarelli's game-winning goal with 3:24 to play.
Â
Blenckstone came through time and time again in the second half against Radford, dishing four of her assists and scoring both of her goals after halftime as the Lancers held off Radford's late charge to win their second straight home game.
Â
In her inaugural season as a Lancer, Blenckstone leads the Big South with 1.92 assists per game and ranks fifth with 3.50 points per game. She has registered at least one point in every game this season and already has three games with at least five points this year.
Â
The Big South award is the first of Blenckstone's career and the fifth won by a Lancer this season. Junior
Kaitlin Luccarelli has earned Big South Attacking Player of the Week, juniors
Corri Calandra and
Dana Joss Defensive Players of the Week, and freshman
Nicole Fordyce Freshman of the Week.
Â
Blenckstone and the Lancers will continue Big South play this Wednesday, April 10, when they head to Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. That game will begin at 3 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
