Buccaneers Erupt to Deny Longwood the Sweep, 16-3

Charleston Southern's Offense Sets Season Highs in Runs and Hits to Down Lancers

FARMVILLE, Va. – Charleston Southern's offense woke up on Sunday and had a monster outing against a Longwood pitching staff that had limited the Buccaneers to eight runs and 16 hits in the first two games of the series. The Buccaneers (12-24, 2-10 Big South) racked up season highs with 16 runs and 18 hits in a 16-3 win that denied Longwood (9-22, 4-8) its first sweep of the season after the Lancers swept a doubleheader on Saturday.

Charleston Southern took advantage of a slow start by Longwood starter Nick Fuchs in the first inning and loaded the bases with no outs. That led to Ryan Stoudamire's two-run single and Reid Hardwick's two-run triple down the line for a quick 4-0 lead. Hardwick finished with a team-high five RBI while going 3-5 at the plate.

After back-to-back doubles made it 5-0 in the fourth, CSU rocked the Lancers with a nine-run fifth inning. Hardwick had a pair of RBI singles, and Donte Blakeney added a two-run double as the Buccaneers combined eight hits with four walks and forced Longwood deep into its bullpen.

On the mound, Cody Maw (2-2) kept the Lancer offense off balance through six innings and took a no-hit bid into the seventh. Nate Blakeney beat out a grounder deep into the hole at short to break up the no hitter. With two on a few batters later, Jacob Mitchell punished a three-run home run a few batters later for his fourth homer of the season, but that was it for the Lancer offense.

Fuchs (1-4) took the loss for Longwood after allowing seven runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out six. He pitched into the fifth inning.

Longwood heads out for a nine-game road swing that starts on Tuesday at George Mason. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
