HONOLULU, Hawaii – A steady stream of two-out hits and runs powered Hawaii past Longwood 9-3 on Tuesday night. The Rainbow Warriors (7-5) plated five of their first six runs with two outs on the way to sweeping the four game series.
For Longwood (3-9),
Jawan McAllister and
De'Andre Pitts led the way with two hits apiece, but the Lancers stranded nine baserunners through seven innings before finally breaking through in the eighth. It was the first multi-hit game of the season for Pitts, while McAllister picked up his third multi-hit game of the year and second of the series.
Longwood starter
Nick Fuchs threw a pair of scoreless innings before Hawaii's offense slowly started rolling. The Rainbow Warriors scored in every inning from the third through the eighth but never scored more than two runs in one inning to slowly break the game open. Maaki Yamazaki broke open the scoring in the third inning with a two-out RBI double, and Ethan Lopez whacked an inside-the-park home run on a tricky fly ball to left field in the fourth.
Two runs in the fifth and sixth plus one more in the seventh put Hawaii up 7-0 before the Lancers finally broke through after loading the bases in the eighth. With two outs, a wild pitch brought
Nate Blakeney in.
Eli Mercado picked up his first two RBI of the season with a two-run single a few pitches later to trim Hawaii's lead to 7-3, but that was as close as Longwood would get.
Dominic DeMiero (1-0) earned the win for Hawaii with 3.1 scoreless innings in his first start of 2019. He struck out two and walked one while giving up three hits.
Nick Fuchs (1-1) took his first loss of the season for Longwood. He struck out six while surrendering four runs on seven hits and two walks and pitched into the fifth inning.
Longwood returns home for a three-game series at Buddy Bolding Stadium with the University at Albany beginning on Saturday, March 9 with a doubleheader that starts at noon.
