FARMVILLE, Va. – Down to its final out and with the bases empty, Longwood once again showed its resiliency Sunday.
Sydney Jacobsen came up with the first triple of her Longwood career to plate
Kasey Carr, who singled two pitches earlier, before scoring on a wild pitch to lift Longwood to a 6-5 walk-off win over Campbell Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field.
"It was exciting," Jacobsen said. "I went up there looking for a good pitch to hit. I wanted to stay aggressive and get my bat on the ball to try to benefit my team."
Jacobsen's clutch hitting came a half inning after Campbell's Kynadi Tipler blasted a two-run home run to hand the Camels a 5-4 lead in being down to its final out, as she was joined by Kayla Fredendall who blasted her third home run of the series earlier in the game.
The win capped a weekend that saw the first-place Lancers (21-11, 8-1 Big South) mount a pair of comebacks, including a six-run rally after falling behind 6-1 one day earlier, en route to earning its second straight series sweep to open Big South play and extend their win streak to a season-best seven straight games.
"We did a great job of hanging in there," said Longwood head coach
Kathy Riley. "We gave ourselves a lot of opportunities and hit the ball hard. Some of those were right to people but we definitely rose to the challenge again.
"We're starting to gain an identity and trust in what we're capable of as a group. If we continue to take steps forward in that area, we have a chance to be a really good team come tournament time. "
Jacobsen's triple propelled a Lancer team that recorded with more than 10 hits for the second straight game, improving to 9-1 in such games on the season. Jordan
Clark,
Kaylynn 'Bug' Batten and
Kasey Carr all finished with a pair of hits while Jacobsen scored a team-high two runs, including the game-winning run.
In the circle,
Arleigh Wood (5-0) picked up the win in two innings of work, throwing two innings and giving up two runs on one hit and a walk. The win for Wood is her second in back-to-back days, as she's earned the win in five of her last seven appearances.
In that stretch, Wood has led the Longwood pitching staff with her 3.27 earned-run average, as the sophomore righty has allowed opponents to hit .233 off her.
Sydney Backstrom earned the start, throwing four innings of two-run ball while
Sydney Gay also worked an inning in relief, allowing one run on three walks.
Megan Richards (10-8) took the loss for the Camels, coming out of the bullpen for 2.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits and two walks on 42 pitches, 25 for strikes.
Longwood wraps up its season-long 10-game homestand Tuesday, April 2, welcoming North Carolina to Lancer Field. That game is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
