FARMVILLE, Va. – Taking the court for the second time in the past 24 hours, Longwood fell into an early hole it could not overcome and fell 5-2 at the hands of surging UNC Asheville Sunday afternoon at Lancer Courts.
Winners of five of their past six matches entering the afternoon, the Bulldogs (17-3, 4-1 Big South) extended that hot streak by storming out to a 5-0 lead and riding that cushion to a takedown of the Lancers.
Longwood (10-8, 1-4 Big South) opened the day in the opposite manner, taking the first match 6-3 in doubles as Amadeo Blasco and Guilherme Sergio took down UNC Asheville's top duo of Henry Pannell and Olly Cull 6-3. However, the Bulldogs quickly turned the tables, evening the score with a 6-2 win at No. 2 from Sirawit Daosaengsawang and taking the opening point on Quinn Fender and Charlie Morkel's 6-3 win at No. 3.
That momentum continued into singles play, beginning with Morkel's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Longwood sophomore Rosen Naydenov. The tables turned even more in UNC Asheville's favor when Patten knocked off Blasco 6-4, 6-1, becoming only the fifth player to defeat Longwood's ace this season and only the second this spring.
Daosaengsawang then secured the match with a win over Sakai, upending Longwood's No. 3 6-2, 6-2. Casasnovas then surrendered a point with a second-set injury retirement to Leo Bierbaum.
Longwood finally got on the board at court two when Sergio claimed a three-set win over Nolan, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (7), 10-7. Cagigas then ended it on a positive note for the Lancers by grinding out a 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 comeback win over Cull at No. 4.
Longwood returns to Lancer Courts against new to conference foe Hampton on Friday, April 5.
