Three Big Innings Send Asheville Past Longwood 14-3

Bulldogs Score 14 Runs in Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Innings to Down Lancers

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Once UNC Asheville's offense started rolling on Saturday afternoon, it grew into an unstoppable force, and Longwood couldn't recover after the Bulldogs plated fourteen runs between the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Asheville clustered 13 of their 16 hits in those three innings to win 14-3 and take the series.

Ten players recorded a hit for Asheville (10-15, 5-3 Big South), and the Bulldogs broke open a scoreless game with an RBI double by Danny Wilson with one out in the fourth. Wilson scored when Chris Troost singled him home a few batters later.

In the fifth, Joe Gruszka doubled in two runs, and Carmine Pagano singled in two more before the wheels fell off in the sixth for Longwood. Asheville rallied for eight runs while racking up seven hits and drawing three walks to take a 14-0 lead.

Longwood (7-19, 2-6 Big South) put runners on base through the first six innings but left five on base, including runners on first and third in the top of the sixth inning. In the seventh, Tyler Mahone hit a pinch-hit single through the right side to get the Lancers on the board, but the damage was done.

"It was a very disappointing day as we struggled to execute in all facets," said Longwood head coach Ryan Mau. "We need to come out tomorrow and fight back. It's early in conference play, but this is a must win game for us tomorrow."

Tyler Morgan (2-4) took the loss for Longwood after allowing six runs, all earned, on seven hits in 4.2 innings while striking out five against three walks.

Jacob Edwards (3-0) earned the win for UNC Asheville. He threw 5.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts against four hits and two walks.

The two teams square off for the final game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
