Red-Hot Charleston Southern Hands Longwood Home Defeat

Bucs Deal Lancers 7-0 Loss to Derail Back-to-Back Wins

FARMVILLE, Va. – Charleston Southern continued its hot streak, snapping Longwood's two-match win streak with a 7-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Lancer Courts.

The Buccaneers (7-7, 5-3) entered the match winners of seven of their past 10 matches and extended that streak to retain their top-five spot in the Big South standings. Sparked at the top of the lineup by a 6-3, 6-1 win from ace Madalina Man, they won at all six singles spots and clinched the doubles point behind a pair of 6-0 wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions.

The defeat derailed back-to-back wins for the Lancers, who were just four days removed from a milestone 5-2 win over UNC Asheville at home Saturday. Longwood followed with a 7-0 victory at Howard Sunday but could not get past a Charleston Southern team that boasts a combined 35-14 record in Big South singles play.

Man set the tone for the match from the top spot, defeating Longwood ace Marija Venta in straight sets. Filippa Ericson followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Longwood No. 2 Yulia Almiron, and Liz Williams grinded out a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Longwood junior Jamie Breunig at No. 3. The loss for Breunig was only her second in the past 11 matches.

Longwood's freshman duo of Anika Tylek and Emma Nurgazieva also fell, with Nurgazieva's 6-3, 4-1 defeat only her second of the spring. Longwood redshirt freshman Crystal Nzewi also came close to forcing a third set in the final bout of the afternoon but fell 6-3, 7-5 (10-7) in the tiebreak.

The loss comes in the first of four consecutive home matches for the Lancers, who will return to action this Saturday, March 30, against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Big South foes Hampton (April 5) and Presbyterian (April 6) will then make the trip to Farmville for back-to-back home conference bouts before the Lancers wrap up the regular season at USC Upstate (April 12) and Gardner-Webb (April 13).
