Lancers Flirt With Perfection in 7-0 Sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore

Women's Tennis /
FARMVILLE, Va. – They don't get much more dominant than that.

Bouncing back from a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Big South contender Charleston Southern on Wednesday, Longwood (11-6, 1-4 Big South) turned the tables and put together a nearly flawless 7-0 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon at Lancer Courts.

The Lancers pulled off sweeps at nearly every position in both singles and doubles, winning all three doubles matches 6-0 and five of six singles bouts 6-0, 6-0. Longwood dropped only one set in 10 total bouts en route to the team's third 7-0 sweep of the season.

With the win, Longwood has now secured the program's first winning regular season since joining the Big South in 2012-13, doing so under first-year head coach and Longwood director of tennis Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez. The win was Longwood's third in the past four matches.

Longwood handled Maryland Eastern Shore (0-6) at every spot, beginning with three straight doubles wins to stake a 1-0 lead. Crystal Nzewi and Emma Nurgazieva led that charge from the top of the lineup, followed by the pairings of Anika Tylek and Marija Venta, and Yulia Almiron and Jamie Breunig.

That dominance continued in singles play with 6-0, 6-0 wins at positions 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, with the lone dropped set coming in Jamie Breunig's 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3. That marked the fifth time this season the Lancers have won at least five singles bouts.

Meanwhile, those shutout wins came at the hands of Marija Venta, Yulia Almiron, Emma Nurgazieva, Anika Tylek and Crystal Nzewi. Nurgazieva's win was her team-leading 14th of the season, while Breunig's was her 13th and eighth in her past 10 matches.

Now after playing six bouts in the past 11 days, Longwood will enjoy a six-day break before hosting Big South newcomer Hampton this Friday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
