Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood heads to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers for the 17th time and sixth straight season. UVA has won 11 straight.
  • The Lancers were swept by Winthrop over the weekend after the Eagles had double-digit hits in each contest.
  • Longwood begins a stretch of alternating home and road weeks. This week, the team has four straight on the road before returning for four straight in Farmville to open the month of April.
  • Freshman Hunter Gilliam leads Longwood at the plate with 24 hits while sporting a .293 batting average. He had his first career three-hit game on Saturday against Winthrop.
  • Longwood's offense has 14 home runs, tied for sixth in the Big South, and 33 doubles, tied for fifth.
  • The Lancer pitching staff is third in the Big South with 189 strikeouts and second with 68 strikeouts looking. 
By The Numbers
  • Longwood starter Tyler Morgan has been stellar for three straight starts for the Lancers. The junior struck out nine while pitching into the seventh inning against Winthrop's Big South-leading offense. He surrendered only three runs, one earned, on six hits and a pair of walks.
  • Longwood has hit 11 home runs in March and 14 for the season, good for fourth in the Big South. The Lancers hit 23 in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam and Jacob Mitchell lead the team with three homers, and De'Andre Pitts and Jawan McAllister each have two. Gilliam hit the team's first homer of the season on opening weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Mitchell had the team's first multi-homer game after knocking out two solo shots against Gardner-Webb on March 16 in the first game of a doubleheader.
  • Eight players have already hit a home run for Longwood after nine players knocked one out of the park in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam has been a revelation in the Longwood order and holds a .293 batting average. The freshman has started all 23 games for the Lancers and leads the team with 24 hits while tying for the team lead with three homers to go with 10 runs scored. He also has amassed eight multi-hit games and had his first three-hit game on Saturday, March 23.
  • Freshman outfielder Cullan Wadsworth has started 20 games for the Lancers and smashed the first triple of his Lancer career against Winthrop.
  • Freshman pitcher Andrew Melnyk has drawn a series opening start in four straight, and struck out a career best seven in a career high six innings on Friday against Winthrop.
  • Longwood leads the Big South with 8.91 strikeouts per nine innings and is third with 189 total strikeouts.
  • Starting pitcher Tyler Morgan has fanned a Big South best 43 batters while racking up 11.06 strikeouts per nine innings, good for second in the Big South. Nick Fuchs is 10th with 8.88 strikeouts per nine innings.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the previous school D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's. 
Last Time Out
  • Early runs put Winthrop ahead of Longwood on Sunday, and every time the Lancers rallied, Winthrop answered with runs in the following half inning in a 10-3 loss. After Longwood cut the lead to 4-3 in the third inning, Winthrop plated four the following half inning to put the game away. 
Scouting Virginia
  • Longwood and Virginia meet for the 18th time in team history and sixth straight season.
  • Virginia is riding a four-game winning streak following a home sweep of Pittsburgh over the weekend. The streak started with a midweek win over UConn, 6-3, before beating PItt 13-3, 7-5 and 5-2.
  • The Virginia offense is hitting .292 while knocking out 14 home runs and 45 doubles. Six players are hitting better than .300 (minimum 50 at bats).
  • Brendan Rivoli leads Virginia with 32 hits and a .352 batting average while posting three home runs and six doubles, and he is one of seven players with at least 10 RBI. Cameron Simmons has hit a team-best four home runs while batting .310. He is tied for the team lead with 18 RBI. Tanner Moms has a team-best 10 doubles to go with three homers and 17 RBI and a .312 average.
  • Griff McGarry leads the starting pitchers with a 3.94 ERA in 29.1 innings of work while striking out a team-high 34. Noah Murdock has a 4.46 ERA in a team-high 34.1 innings to go with 33 K's to only 12 walks. Out of the bullpen, Kyle Whitten has posted three saves in 11 appearances, both team-leading marks, with 14 strikeouts in 12.1 innings. Paul Kosanovich has logged a team high 18.2 innings out of the bullpen in nine appearances. Chesdin Harrington has a bullpen-best 20 strikeouts in 15 innings across eight appearances.
