Big Innings Lead No. 19 James Madison Past Longwood in Wednesday DH

CAA Power James Madison Extends Win Streak to Nine Straight With 14-1, 10-2 Wins

FARMVILLE, Va. – No. 19 James Madison extended its winning streak to nine consecutive games, as the Dukes swept Wednesday's doubleheader against Longwood at Lancer Field.

The Dukes (17-5) had seven extra base hits and three home runs while utilizing a nine-run sixth inning in a 14-1 victory in six innings, before two-time All-American Megan Good tossed a complete-game effort to spur James Madison to a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.

Each of Longwood's hits throughout the doubleheader came via the home run ball, as Leah Powell, Jordan Clark and Kaylynn 'Bug' Batten each added to their home run totals on a day in which the two teams combined for 10 home runs on the day.

Longwood will look to bounce back in welcoming Big South newcomer USC Upstate to Lancer Field for a three-game series that will begin Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. while the series finale will be played Sunday, March 24 in front of a national audience on ESPNU.

No. 19 James Madison 14, Longwood 1 (6)

James Madison hit three home runs and seven extra base hits, as the Dukes powered their way past Longwood 14-1 in the opening game of the day.

Kate Gordon put together a 3-for-4 performance with a pair of home runs to finish with four RBI and two runs scored. Logan Newton also hit a home run, her fourth of the season, in a 2-for-2 day, as three players had multi-hit performances and seven of the Dukes' 11 hits went for extra bases.

It was all in support of Odicci Alexander (9-0), who allowed one run on one hit in six innings of work, as she kept her unblemished record in tact. Odicci added seven strikeouts against 19 batters faced while throwing 77 pitches, 58 pitches for strikes.

A nine-run sixth inning broke a 5-1 game open for James Madison, as the Dukes sent 14 batters to the plate with three of their seven extra base hits coming in the inning.

Powell blasted her second home run in her last four games in the third inning for Longwood's only hit of the game.

Sydney Gay (7-5) took the loss for the Lancers, surrendering five runs on four hits in three innings. Arleigh Wood pitched two innings, her third appearance in the last six games. Angelina Sherba also made her Longwood debut, pitching one complete inning.

No. 19 James Madison 10, Longwood 2

Four extra base hits, a six-run second inning and a complete-game performance from 2017 Shutt Sports/NFCA Division I Softball Player of the Year Megan Good led James Madison to a 10-2 win over James Madison in the nightcap.

Good, who's returning to her two-time All-American form after missing the 2018 season due to injury, gave up just two runs on two hits in seven innings while facing four batters above the minimum. Good added four strikeouts and walked just one, as she tossed 86 pitches, 56 for strikes.

In addition to her performance in the circle, Good helped herself at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored, while a pair of hits from Alexander added to the effort with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Alexander was one of three Dukes to go deep, as she was joined by Sara Jubas and Logan Newton.

Clark and Batten had Longwood's two hits, hitting back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning.

Sydney Backstrom (5-6) went the distance in the circle, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits and three walks while adding five strikeouts.
