FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood freshman
Guillermo Cagigas was named Big South Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after going 2-1 in both singles and doubles play last week.
Â
A native of Madrid, Spain, Cagigas earned a pair of straight-sets singles wins against Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T and back-to-back doubles wins against Winthrop and North Carolina A&T as the Lancers went 3-0 during the week and opened Big South play with a 4-3 road upset of conference powerhouse Winthrop.
Â
Cagigas earned all of those singles victories as the Nos. 3-4 slots and his doubles wins at Nos. 2-3. He extended his singles win streak to four straight wins before Winthrop No. 3 Gabriel Dias ended it with a 6-2, 6-4 win Sunday. Prior to that, Cagigas upended Norfolk State No. 3 Flavian Hernandez 7-5, 6-0, and North Carolina A&T No. 4 Hayden Faulkenbury 6-2, 6-1.
Â
Cagigas's doubles wins came alongside sophomore partner
Marc Casasnovas, as the pair knocked off Winthrop's No. 2 duo of Alberto Tinagli and Aditya Gokhale 6-1 and North Carolina A&T's Jordan Lawrence and Nolan Martino 6-2.
Â
Now on a four-match win streak, the Lancers will have a chance to improve to 2-0 in the Big South Wednesday when they face Commonwealth rival Radford at 1 p.m. in Radford, Va.
