ROCK HILL, S.C. – Jamie Breunig captured her 11th singles win of the season, as Longwood's three-match win streak was halted in Winthrop 6-1 win over the Lancers in the Big South opener Sunday afternoon at Rock Hill Tennis Center.
 
Breunig captured the lone win of the day for Longwood from the No. 3 singles position, as she defeated Megan Kauffman in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1. The win for Breunig is her sixth straight and marks eight of her nine wins in the dual season have come in straight sets.
 
The Big South preseason favorite, Winthrop (9-4, 5-0 Big South) took the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, as Tayla Van Eck and Ellie Burns posted a 6-1 win over Emma Nurgazieva and Crystal Nzewi on court three. The 33rd-ranked pair of Lauren Proctor and Kauffman sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 decision over Longwood's ace pair of Marija Venta and Anika Tylek on court one.
 
Breunig's win on court three was the top highlight of the day for a Longwood (8-3, 0-1 Big South) team going up against a Winthrop dynasty that has seen the Eagles take 17 of the last 20 Big South Championships.
 
The Eagles stretched their lead to 2-0 when the 55th-ranked Proctor picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Longwood's Venta, before Van Eck defeated Tylek 6-2, 6-1. Winthrop's Alisa Soloveva sealed the win for the Eagles with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Tylek.
 
Yulia Almiron suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback against Soloveva on court two, as Soloveva clinched Winthrop's fifth win in its last six matches.
 
On court four, Nurgazieva hung tough for the Lancers before falling to Rafaela Santos, 7-5, 6-3, while Burns defeated Nzewi, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Longwood plays its eighth straight match on the road, as the Lancers will square off against Radford Wednesday, March 20 at 2 p.m. After that match, the Lancers will play two consecutive Big South matches on its home courts against Campbell and UNC Asheville.
