Lancer Leadoff 
  • Longwood hits the road to open Big South play at Gardner-Webb. The Lancers meet the Runnin' Bulldogs for the 19th time in team history, and the two teams began playing back in 2009.
  • The Lancers nabbed a spot in the 2018 Big South playoffs with a win on the final day of the regular season against Gardner-Webb last spring.
  • Longwood opened the season with 11 of its first 16 at home at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
  • Hunter Gilliam leads the Lancers with three home runs, and the Lancers have hit nine as a team. Six players have hit a homer this season.
  • Tyler Morgan was named the Big South Co-Starting Pitcher of the Week for his seven-inning, nine-strikeout performance on March 9 against Albany.
  • Longwood's pitching staff is second in the Big South with 8.72 strikeouts per nine innings and tied for first with 48 batters struck out looking. 
By The Numbers 
  • Longwood starter Tyler Morgan dominated Albany on March 9 in game two of a doubleheader with a season best nine strikeouts. He was named the Big South Co- Starting Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his Longwood career.
  • Seven of Morgan's season-high nine strikeouts were looking, and he only surrendered five baserunners in seven innings.
  • Morgan leads the Big South with 14 batters struck out looking and is tied for second overall with 24 strikeouts.
  • Longwood has hit five home runs in March and nine in the season. The team is tied for fourth in the Big South with nine home runs after hitting 23 in 2018. Longwood didn't hit a home run until March 13 in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam leads the team with three homers, and Jawan McAllister has hit two. Gilliam hit the team's first homer of the season on opening weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Six players have already hit a home run for Longwood after nine players knocked one out of the park in 2018.
  • Hunter Gilliam has been a revelation in the Longwood order and holds a .315 batting average. The freshman has started all 16 games for the Lancers and leads the team with three home runs and 17 hits while tying for the team lead with nine runs scored. He also has amassed six multi-hit games, best on the team while reaching base safely in four straight.
  • Freshman outfielder Cullan Wadsworth has started every game for the Lancers and has played both corner spots in the outfield. He is third on the team with eight runs scored and second with a .397 on-base percentage.
  • Freshman pitcher Andrew Melnyk has drawn a series opening start in back-to-back games and will start the team's conference opener at Gardner-Webb. His first collegiate start was a midweek contest at James Madison, and he struck out a career high four batters in four innings.
  • Longwood is second in the Big South with 8.72 strikeouts per nine innings, less than half a strikeout per nine behind league-leading Campbell. The Lancers have struck out 125 in 16 games.
  • Starting pitcher Tyler Morgan is tied for second in the Big South with 24 strikeouts and is third in the Big South with 10.80 strikeouts per nine innings. Nick Fuchs leads the Big South with 11.42 strikeouts per nine while sitting seventh with 22 K's on the season. 
Last Time Out 
  • Longwood was nickeled and dimed by Norfolk State in a 10-4 loss on Tuesday. The Spartans used 12 singles on 15 hits and scored in five separate innings to take down the Lancers. Hunter Gilliam launched his team-leading third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth. 
Scouting Gardner-Webb 
  • Longwood and Gardner-Webb meet for the sixth time as Big South opponents. Longwood went 1-2 against Gardner-Webb in 2018, but the win vaulted the Lancers into the Big South playoffs.
  • Gardner-Webb has lost four straight after starting the season 7-3. Over the weekend, the Runnin' Bulldogs were swept in a three-game series by Wofford before falling at North Carolina in a midweek game. Prior to Wofford, Gardner-Webb topped South Carolina 10-2 in a midweek game.
  • Gardner-Webb leads the Big South with a .273 batting average as a team. Taber Mongero (.389), Corey Howard (.358) and Justin Kunz (.339) are hitting above .300 and have started at least 10 games. Chandi Redmond leads the team with 14 RBI, and Kunz is second with 10. Kunz leads the team with 14 runs scored.
  • Kyle Ruehlman leads Gardner- Webb's starting pitchers with a 1.86 ERA across 19.1 innings. Isaac Campbell has a team-best 18 strikeouts in a team-high 21.2 innings to go with a 2.49 ERA. Jarrett Thompson has three saves and a 2.08 ERA in the bullpen.
