Lancers Unable to Slow Potent High Point Offense

Ciarah Bennett, Mallory Odell Finish in Double Figures in 70-47 Loss

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point guard Lindsey Edwards scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting and the Panthers shot .547 from the floor en route to a 70-47 victory over the Longwood women's basketball team Tuesday night inside the Millis Center.

Edwards scored 13 of her 18 points in the second half, fueling the Big South's most dynamic offense to its highest field-goal percentage of the season and bettering the .532 shooting clip that High Point shot against Gardner-Webb. Edwards was joined in double figures by Bria Gibson, who scored 14 points off the bench, while 2016-17 Big South Player of the Year Emma Bockrath finished with 11 points while adding six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

"We didn't have a single quarter in which we held them below 50% shooting," said Longwood head coach Rebecca Tillett. "We threw a number of defensive looks at them but they did a good job responding. We did force 24 turnovers which is well above their average but we simply weren't able to get enough stops."

The Panthers (19-7, 12-3 Big South) limited Longwood (3-26, 2-14 Big South) to a .333 clip and took advantage of 27 Lancer turnovers, converting those into 35 points with eight coming in transition. The win is the fourth straight for High Point, as the Panthers remain in second-place in the Big South standings with nine days in the regular season.

Tuesday's game marks the end of a stretch for the Lancers in which Tillett's squad played each of the top four teams in the Big South standings, facing Radford, UNC Asheville, Hampton and High Point consecutively.

Ciarah Bennett scored in double figures for the 11th game this season, as she finished with a team-high 12 points, including a 3-of-6 performance from beyond the arc. Mallory Odell joined Bennett in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with seven rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Bennett was 3-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc, as it marks the second straight game the senior guard has finished in double figures and is averaging 8.6 points per game in the last five games the Lancers have played. Scoring in double figures for the third time in the last five games, Odell moves her average to 7.1 points per game, as she's second on the team in the last five game stretch with her 10.8 points.

The Lancers head back to Willett Hall Saturday, March 2, as the Lancers welcome Presbyterian for a 3 p.m. opening tip, as Longwood will honor its five seniors – Kristina Antonenko, Ciarah Bennett, Rosemary Ilang, Ashlee Jones and Kate Spradlin -- prior to the game.

"At this point of the year, we want to do two things. We want to honor our seniors and we want to head into the conference tournament with momentum," Tillett said. "We want to continue to learn and grow while taking the positive momentum that we created before this most recent difficult stretch so that our current seniors can have the opportunity to win their first conference tournament game."
