LOUISVILLE, Ky. -The Lancers knew this would be a difficult road trip, with the reigning Mid-American Conference champion Miami (Ohio) and a top-five team in Louisville awaiting them. However, despite playing a second game in as many days, Longwood's resiliency and heart were both on display again.
Â
The Longwood field hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 5 Louisville on Saturday afternoon. Despite trailing entering the final quarter, Longwood responded by scoring two fourth quarter goals for the second straight game as they continue to battle through the final whistle.
Â
"The positives are the way that we fought and scored two goals against in my opinion the strongest team we faced this year," said head coach
Iain Byers. "There are some positives to be taken. They are always a good challenge, and we like these challenges because it gets us ready for the MAC tournament."
Â
Louisville (12-2, 2-2 ACC) entered as the fifth ranked team in the country, with their lone defeats coming at the hands of No. 9 Virginia and No. 1 North Carolina. Averaging a robust 2.71 goals per game, four different Cardinals tallied goals today as they reached the four goal mark for the fourth time this season. Louisville has also been a force on both ends of the field, as they boasted a goals against average of just 1.00 entering the contest.
Â
The strong Cardinals defense could not keep the Lancers (6-8, 2-2 MAC) out of the net, however, as Longwood struck twice in the fourth quarter to bring the margin down to just two goals. Today was just the fifth time in 14 games for the Cardinals that they allowed two or more goals.
Â
Briana Greene notched her first assist of the season with a beautiful pass to spring senior
Olivia Wawrzyniak on a breakaway as she was able to beat Louisville keeper Hollyn Barr for her fourth goal of the season. Wawryzniak would notch an assist moments later to give her a three-point night. She found freshman
Floor Schouten, who buried a shot to register her first collegiate goal. In net,
Katie Wyman notched six saves for the Lancers.
Â
"To get two goals is good," added Byers. "They are one of the best teams in the country so we are relatively happy with the result."
Â
The Lancers will look to build on this performance in their final three games before conference tournament play, including two MAC contests. They will first wrap up their out of conference schedule against Saint Louis on Tuesday, Oct. 22 back in Farmville, Va.
