FARMVILLE, Va. – Charleston Southern forward Shelby Wilbanks scored 20 of her game and career-high 30 points in the first half to lead the Buccaneers past the Longwood women's basketball team 81-74 Saturday afternoon inside Willett Hall.
Charleston Southern was able to hold off a fourth-quarter charge from the Lancers that saw Longwood cut a 22-point deficit and claw all the way back to six points with 1:31 remaining. However, Wilbanks and the Buccaneers hit 3-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to lift the Buccaneers (4-11, 1-3 Big South) to their first Big South road win since February 2018.
The Buccaneers overcame a career-high 28 points from Longwood (1-12, 0-3 Big South) guard
Stephanie Guihon on 10-of-16 shooting while
Dayna Rouse secured her third straight game in double figures with 17 points and
Ciarah Bennett added 12 after being inserted back into the starting lineup.
Wilbanks negated the 28 points from Guihon to score 30 of her own with 20 of those coming in the first half, as she surpassed her career-high of 20 on 11-of-16 from the floor while adding five rebounds and two steals. Coming into the game averaging 6.4 points per contest, Wilbanks was joined by Breannah Bretches (12), Tierra Steede (11) and Rachel Burns (10) in double figures. The 30-point display from Wilbanks is the first for the Buccaneers since Rachelle Coward scored 32 against Coastal Carolina in 2012.
Longwood's Guihon scored 20-plus for the second time this season, as she surpassed the 20 points she scored against Saint Francis (Pa.). The latest 20-point performance for the Largo, Md., native hands the 5-6 guard her fourth game in double figures in Longwood's last six games, as she's averaging 11.8 points per game.
In addition, Rouse scored in double figures for the ninth time this season, as she's scored 15-plus points in six games to increase her scoring average to 13.1 points per game – among the top-eight in the Big South. Rouse, who came into the day shooting at a .576 clip, finished 6-of-7 from the floor while adding four rebounds and three steals in 31 minutes.
Bennett was re-inserted back into the starting lineup after coming off the bench in the last two games, as she added 12 points and three steals in 34 minutes.
After playing its first game inside Willett Hall in 28 days, Longwood will return to the road where it faces Commonwealth foe Hampton in the first Big South meeting between the two teams. That game is set for a 7 p.m. opening tip inside the Hampton Convocation Center.
