Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Lancers Cruise To 6-1 Friday Victory

Longwood Handles N.C. Central In Nonconference Action

FARMVILLE, Va. – Nearly a week removed from their road win at UNC Asheville to close Big South play, Longwood men's tennis kept the momentum rolling with a 6-1 decision Friday afternoon from Lancer Courts.

Longwood (11-8, 3-4 Big South) handled their business Friday as they took the doubles point for a 1-0 lead and never took their foot off the gas.

Already holding the single-season wins record, Amadeo Blasco added another to his impressive season with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 straight-set win at court No. 1 for his 27th singles victory. Of those 27, 14 have come in the spring as he carries an 8-2 record over his past 10 matches into the regular season finale Sunday.

Just behind Blasco's impressive season is junior Julian Farthing and his 22 wins after Friday's pair of 6-3 sets that gave the Lancers a 3-0 lead at the time. Farthing's 22 wins – 16 in the spring – give the Lancers two 20-match winners in singles play for the first time in program history. Farthing also keeps inching up the all-time wins list as he's racked up 57 career victories entering the weekend.

Senior Jorge Godoy has also enjoyed the career-year party throughout the lineup as he collected win No. 17 with a 7-5, 6-3 straight-set win in the fifth slot clinching the Lancer victory 4-0 at the time. Godoy's 10 wins in the spring are a personal best as a Lancer to go along with his 17 overall wins. In his two seasons donning the Longwood blue and white, Godoy has been a staple at the No. 5 spot collecting 27 wins entering his final match at Lancer Courts Sunday.

Left-handed freshman Valentin Popescu continued his strong collegiate debut season collecting his 17th victory to tie Godoy for third-most on the squad. Popescu's 17 wins are the third-most by a freshman behind only teammates Blasco (20 in 2017) and Farthing (19 in 2016).

Popescu's latest win didn't come east though as he overcame a 6-4 defeat in the first set with 6-4, 6-1 second and third sets to stretch the lead to 5-0 before fellow freshman Daniel Hernandez ballooned it to 6-0 behind his 6-0, 6-4 straight-set win at the sixth spot.

N.C. Central's Gabriel Cucalon was responsible for the lone Eagle tally Friday as he outlasted a determined Raisei Sakai in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and 6-1 final score. After forcing a decisive third set 6-2, Sakai jumped to a 3-2 lead on Cucalon, but was unable to finish down the stretch.

Longwood returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. as part of a men's and women's doubleheader from Lancer Courts versus Norfolk State. The men's squad is set to honor seniors Jorge Godoy and captain Lachlan Manser before their final match in Farmville wearing the Lancer blue and white.
