Four-Run Seventh Leads Lancers to Series Sweep at Gardner-Webb

Five Lancers Record Multi-Hit Games in 6-2 Win in Series Finale at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A four-run seventh inning including back-to-back home runs from Jordan Clark and Kelsey Sweeney handed the Longwood softball team a 6-2 win over Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon at Brinkley Stadium.

Karleigh Donovan brought home the go-ahead run with an RBI double into right center a half inning after Gardner-Webb plated the game-tying run field before Clark and Sweeney went back-to-back to lead Longwood (35-14, 17-4 Big South) to its third Big South series sweep of the season and their 20th consecutive win against Gardner-Webb (28-27, 8-13 Big South).

The Lancers have earned at least the No. 2 seed in the Big South Tournament and an opening-day bye and will await the result of Liberty's series against Winthrop next weekend to learn its final seed in the tournament.

"We did a lot of good things today," Riley said. "I thought we pitched pretty well and made some good defensive plays. We have a couple of minor things to shore up but we just need to continue to play the game hard.

Five different Lancers finished with multi-hit performances, including Clark, Donovan and Sweeney while Kaylynn Batten and Jenna Dunn also added a pair of hits. Throughout the three-game series, Longwood had three straight games with 10-plus hits to move to 19-0 when finishing with at least 10 hits.

Clark finished with multi-hit games in each of the three games throughout the series, as she raised her batting average to raise her batting average to .276 on the season. The Midlothian, Va. product  hit .462 in the three-game series, as she's riding a five-game hitting streak with four consecutive multi-hit games.

Sydney Backstrom (11-5) got the win in the circle with six-strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings. Backstrom added five strikeouts for her fifth performance of the season allowing two runs or less while adding five strikeouts.

"Sydney had some good movement today on her pitches," Riley said. "I thought that she was grinding on some mechanical things and that hurt her in spots but other than that she was great."

Sydney Gay came on to pitch the seventh inning facing three batters to complete the three-game series sweep.

Longwood was able to overcome a two-hit day from Kaylee Wacaster who went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Ashley Wark (16-16) took the loss, throwing 6.2 innings and giving up six runs, two earned, on 12 hits and a pair of walks. Sam Harrell came on to get the final out of the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Longwood will have a week off for exams before concluding its regular season Saturday, May 5 versus Duke. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Lancer Field.
