HONOLULU – BYU pitcher Kerisa Viramontes tossed a complete-game, as she got all of the run support she needed to lead the Cougars to a 2-1 win over the Longwood softball team Wednesday to open play in the Hawai'i Spring Fling Tournament.
Lexi Tarrow and Alexa Strid combined for four of BYU's five hits and produced both of the Cougars RBI off Longwood (9-7) right-hander
Sydney Gay. The Lancers, who outhit BYU by a 6-5 margin, were defeated for just the second time on the season when outhitting their opposition.
Viramontes (2-3) picked up her second win of the season for the Cougars (9-11), giving up one run on six hits and a pair of walks. She added nine strikeouts in the complete-game effort while throwing 110 pitches.
"We had a solid effort today, but just didn't get it done in the clutch," said Longwood head coach
Kathy Riley. "We're developing into a consistent team which is a huge goal of ours."
Gay (5-4) took the hard-luck loss, as she went five innings in the circle and gave up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters. On the season, Gay has allowed more than two earned runs just once in the 11 games she's pitched.
Sydney Mundell came on for Gay in the sixth inning, working a perfect frame on 10 pitches.
At the plate, Longwood outhit was led by a 2-for-3 performance from
Destiny Martinez, as she has collected hits in three of her last four games to increase her batting average to .324 on the season.
Kaylynn Batten clubbed her second home run of the campaign in the sixth inning, as she joins
Jordan Clark for the team lead with two blasts on the season. In addition,
Karleigh Donovan,
Jenna Dunn and
Kasey Carr each amassed hits.
"I can't wait until tomorrow when we get a chance to compete again," Riley said.
Longwood will get that opportunity for a pair of rematches with a doubleheader Thursday. The Lancers will look for their second win of the season against East Carolina at 4 p.m., before looking to avenge its extra-inning loss to James Madison at 9 p.m. ET.
