Lancers Fall in Extras to CAA Powerhouse James Madison

Jordan Clark Hits Second Blast in As Many Days in 4-2 Loss

HONOLULU, HAWAI'I – A one out home run in the bottom of the seventh inning from Jordan Clark sent Longwood to extra innings, before (RV) James Madison responded with three runs in the eighth inning to escape the Lancers' upset bid 4-2 Saturday at the Texaco Malihini Kipa Aloha Softball Tournament.

Down to two of their final outs, Clark went yard for the second straight day to draw Longwood even with their Commonwealth rival. That home run was the ninth time in the last 10 games that Clark delivered a hit for the Lancers, as Longwood (8-6) dropped its first extra inning game of the season.

"Today's game was a quality competition between two competitive teams," said Longwood head coach Kathy Riley. "We're playing good softball and looking forward to turning the corner into making 2018 something special."

However, the Dukes (13-2), who received votes in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll, took advantage of the international tiebreaker in extra innings, scoring three runs courtesy of a two-run double from Cambry Arnold and a solo home run from Odicci Alexander, who was 2-for-3 in the game.

In a pitcher's duel between Alexander and Longwood's Sydney Gay, it was Alexander who came out on top twirling a complete game performance in which she gave up two runs on two hits while striking out eight. The win for the JMU pitcher was her seventh of the season, running her record to 7-1.

Coming off a pair of impressive outings, including a three-hitter against East Carolina Friday, Gay (5-3) took the hard-luck loss despite allowing just one run on three hits thru seven innings. The Lancer righty was tagged for four runs, two earned, and three walks while adding four strikeouts to her total.

Krista Kelly added an RBI single in the eighth inning to score Karleigh Donovan.

"Our focus is already on playing a tough Cal team tomorrow to work to get a win," Riley said.

Longwood returns to the field Sunday to wrap up play in the Texaco Malihini Aloha Softball Tournament against No. 15 Cal. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.
