Lancers Take Series With DH Split Over Campbell

Campbell Takes First Game 3-1 in 10 Innings Before Longwood Responds With 10-1 Run-Rule Win in Nightcap

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood's bats came alive with 10 runs on 10 hits to earn its second run-rule win of the weekend, as the Lancers and Campbell split the doubleheader at Lancer Field.

Campbell ace Megan Richards tossed a no-hitter in Saturday's opener in leading the Camels to a 3-1 win in 10 innings, while seven Lancers had hits in the nightcap to back Sydney Gay's complete-game two-hitter in a 10-1 run-rule win.

Longwood (20-11, 7-2 Big South) takes the three-game series, as the Lancers have now won each of its first three series in Big South play.

Longwood's pitching duo of Gay and freshman Sydney Backstrom combined to allow one earned run throughout the day, limiting the Camels to a .161 batting average. Gay and Backstrom each had five strikeouts and held Campbell to one extra base hit throughout the day.

Three different Lancers – Jordan Clark, Destiny Martinez and Jessica Smith – paced Longwood at the plate with a pair of hits while Smith clubbed her third home run of the season to finish the game with two RBI and a run scored.

The 2-for-2 performance from Smith marks her seventh multi-hit game of the season, as she moved her batting average to .333 and enjoyed her team-leading seventh game of the season with multiple RBI.

"I think we just increased our energy level," Smith said. "We definitely work well as a team, and we're usually good at coming back from challenges. We were presented a challenge and we rose up to meet it."

Longwood returns to the diamond Tuesday, as it continues its 11-game homestand with a 5 p.m. single game against Hampton.

Campbell 3, Longwood 1 (10)

Campbell ace Megan Richards threw a 10-inning no-hitter, carrying the Fighting Camels into extra innings where they upset Longwood 3-1 in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at Lancer Field.

Richards grinded her way through 10.0 complete innings, tossing 137 pitches to shut down a Longwood (19-11, 6-2 Big South) offense that less than 24 hours prior plated 15 runs on 12 hits in a 15-4 win in Friday's series opener. Richards was able to stymie that offense through the first seven innings and three extras before Campbell took advantage of three Longwood errors that led to two unearned runs in the 10th.
"Obviously it was difficult because we didn't get any hits in 10 innings," Riley said. "I wish we had made some adjustments as the game went along. We needed some recognition and pick up the pace a little bit. Campbell really came out after yesterday's game ready to play."

Richards (10-7) struck out six and scattered four walks to outduel Longwood starter Sydney Backstrom, who threw 8.0 innings of one-run ball before exiting with the game tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth.
"We were responsible for Campbell getting a run," Riley said. "We basically gave them a run and we had to start taking care of ourselves and holding each other accountable while the game was going on."

That deadlock lasted one more frame until Campbell three-hitter Caroline Smith started a 10th-inning rally with a one-out single and came around to score the go-ahead run. After Smith reached with a base hit through the left side, Megan Mozingo was hit by a pitch to push her to second base. Smith then stole third and drew a throw from Longwood catcher Kaylynn Batten, which, with third baseman Jessica Smith charging in on a feigned bunt attempt, was caught by shortstop Leah Powell at the bag. However, Powell and Smith collided as soon as the throw arrived, which knocked the ball out of Powell's glove and sent Smith home for the go-ahead run.

Mozingo scored on the following play when Powell knocked down a sharply hit ground ball but sent her throw to the plate wide of Batten.

Longwood 10, Campbell 1 (5)

Longwood's bats came to life, erupting for 10 runs on 10 hits as the Lancers took the rubber game to claim the series with a 10-1 win in five innings.

"It was a good response after going 10 innings and not getting a hit," Riley said. "Just coming back out and attacking the ball and being comfortable and putting ourselves in a position to do well was most important of all that we did."

Three different Lancers – Jordan Clark, Destiny Martinez and Jessica Smith – paced Longwood at the plate with a pair of hits while Smith clubbed her third home run of the season to finish the game with two RBI and a run scored.

"It felt great. It felt like I had pulled it [foul]. I didn't know if it was fair or foul," Smith said of her home run. "The first game I was in my own head – it's been like that for the past couple of games – it was good to go out there and relax and hit the ball. I was seeing it better. It felt really good."

The offensive explosion for Longwood backed a complete-game two-hitter from ace Sydney Gay, as she allowed just five baserunners while striking out a pair in 72 pitches, 47 for strikes.

Seven different Lancers collected hits in the game, as Jenna Dunn added her first career home run and a pair of doubles from Jordan Clark added to her team-leading nine two-baggers of the season.

Haley Hutchins (3-5) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in three innings while allowing three walks and striking out two batters.

Megan Richards and Hannah McCravy combined to pitch the fifth inning, giving up five runs.
