Lancers Shutout Radford 1-0 to Complete Three-Game Series Sweep

Jordan Clark Delivered Go-Ahead RBI in Fifth Inning

FARMVILLE, Va. – Jordan Clark brought home the go-ahead run with a fifth inning RBI double to lead the Longwood softball team to a 1-0 win over Radford Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field.

Clark came up big with one of four Longwood hits on the day, as she delivered a one-out double into the gap in right center to bring home Glenn Walters for the game's only run.

"I was just looking for something good to hit," Clark said. "I struggled a little bit at the start of today and yesterday so I just tried to come up with a clear mind. I got a good pitch to hit and I was able to drive it in order to bring in the run."

The win for the Lancers (15-8, 3-0 Big South) solidified a three-game sweep over the Highlanders (14-12, 0-3 Big South), extending Longwood's winning streak to six games. It also marks the third time in Longwood's Big South era that the Lancers have gotten off to a 3-0 start in conference play.

14041"Sometimes it's easy to let your foot off the gas a little after you win two games, so I felt we did a nice job to match the competitive spirit that Radford had today," said Longwood head coach Kathy Riley. "The biggest bright spot all weekend, I felt like in each of the three games we departmentalized how to play each game from the beginning to the end."

Longwood continued its dominance in the Big South, sweeping its 19th series in its six seasons in the league. In addition, the Lancers extend their winning streak over the Highlanders to 20 straight, taking each of the 20 matchups since joining the conference prior to the 2013 season.

Four different Lancers collected hits on the day, as Kaylynn Batten, Karleigh Donovan and Jessica Smith joined Clark with a base hit.

All four Longwood pitchers were worked into the game, as the group combined for the shutout and limited Radford to seven hits.

"We had a lot of good things with everybody going today," Riley said. "The pitchers have been the strength of the team throughout the year. They've done a great job."

Sydney Backstrom (6-3) collected the win, as she tossed two innings of one-hit softball in relief, retiring six of the eight batters she faced. Arleigh Wood came on to pick-up her first career save, tossing a scoreless seventh while allowing two hits.

14088Sydney Mundell got the start in the circle, as she pitched two shutout innings. A day after picking up a pair of victories, Sydney Gay got in two innings of work, allowing two hits while walking three.

"Today, we decided to get all of our pitchers in the game by design," Riley said. "Even with the score 1-0, we weren't going to change anything. A lot of it had to do with building confidence and trust, giving each one of them an opportunity to come out and be a part of a win."

Throughout the weekend, Longwood's pitching staff allowed just one earned run over the course of the three-game series and pitched to a 0.33 team ERA while adding 15 strikeouts and yielding just four extra base hits.

"Our defense definitely helps us out, because sometimes we'll miss a pitch and they do a good job to back us up," Backstrom said. "We did a nice job in the circle, but our defense was there to back us up as well throughout the entire weekend."

Kayla Huffman (4-3) took the loss for Radford, giving up the game's only run on one hit and a walk. Abby Morrow got the start in the circle and went 5.2 innings, allowing three hits and three strikeouts. She threw 61 pitches, 45 for strikes.

Longwood will have five days off before traveling to Charleston, S.C. for its first Big South road series March 24-25 against Charleston Southern. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
