CLINTON, S.C. – Four double figure scorers, along with a Division I-record .580 shooting performance propelled the Longwood women's basketball team to a convincing 75-60 win over Presbyterian to complete the series sweep over the Blue Hose Saturday afternoon inside the Templeton Center.
The Lancers (4-19, 2-10 Big South) shot .615 (8-of-13) and held the Blue Hose (8-15, 5-7 Big South) to 3-of-14 (.214) in the final period to earn its first Big South road victory of the season. Longwood held the Blue Hose to .385 shooting for the game, marking the second game against Presbyterian this season that Longwood has held the Big South's top three-point shooting team under the 40-percent mark.
"I'm very happy for the ladies," said Longwood head coach
Bill Reinson. "They've played hard in a lot of games this year and had very little to show for it. Today, they played extremely hard, followed the game plan and were rewarded for their effort."
Longwood's shooting clinic of .580 marked the top shooting performance from the Lancers in the program's Division I era, surpassing the .531 mark the Lancers shot against Radford during the 2013-14 season. It marks second time this season that the Lancers have shot above the .500 mark, surpassing .600 shooting in three of four quarters.
Autumn Childress secured her Big South-leading ninth double-double performance of the season, despite missing seven games to sickness and injury. Childress finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds while
Stephanie Guihon and
Micaela Ellis each scored a team-high 14 points.
Kristina Antonenko pitched in with 10 points, as eight of nine Lancers to earn playing time scored at least four points.
"Everyone contributed today, which made the victory even more enjoyable," Reinson said. "Hopefully, this can give us a confidence boost going into the homestretch."
The game for Childress marked her fourth of the season with 15-plus boards, as she added four assists and a steal. The 5-10 guard from Midlothian, Va., has secured a
double-double performance in four of her past six games played. In that stretch, Childress has averaged 10.2 points per game to go along with 11.2 rebounds.
"Autumn not only scored and rebounded today, but she also did a fine job of setting up her teammates for scores," Reinson said.
Longwood's frontcourt of Childress, Antonenko,
Dayna Rouse and
Mallory Odell helped the Lancers dominate the post, outscoring Presbyterian in the paint by a 50-22 margin.
Antonenko scored six of her 10 points in the final quarter, helping the Lancers take control of a game that featured 10 lead changes throughout.
Meanwhile, Guihon secured her third game of the season in double figures and first in Big South play. The Largo, Md., native finished an efficient 6-of-7 from the floor, adding four rebounds and a steal in 28 minutes on the floor.
"Stephanie was aggressive today," Reinson said. "She attacked the basket and got some easy hoops."
Ellis and
Kate Spradlin sealed the victory by combining to make eight of 10 free throws in the final two minutes. Ellis finished in double figures for the seventh time on the season.
Courtney Story led Presbyterian with 14 points to go along with six assists to lead four Blue Hose in double figures. Janie Miles, who was honored prior to the game after scoring her 1,000th point, finished with 13 while Kacie Hall and Ericka Blackwell-Boyden added 11 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lancers look to win their second straight when they return to the road Tuesday, Feb. 13 at Gardner-Webb. That game will mark the Lancers fourth and final Education Day contest of the season with an 11 a.m. opening tip. It will also mark Longwood's final game of the 2017-18 regular season outside the Commonwealth of Virginia.
