Backcourt Pair of Wanink, Carman Lead Terriers Past Longwood

Ciarah Bennett, Dayna Rouse Combine For 37 Points in 101-72 Loss

FARMVILLE, Va. – Wofford's backcourt duo of Chloe Wanink and Jackie Carman each poured in 25 points to lead the Terriers past the Longwood women's basketball team 101-72 Saturday afternoon inside Willett Hall.

The 50 combined points from Wanink and Carman led the way for five Terriers that finished in double figures. Ja'Da Green added 10 assists to go along with 10 points to pick up a double-double, while Jamari McDavid scored 13 points and Cairo Booker added 11 in a game where Wofford shot .500 (36-of-72) from the floor.

The Terriers (6-4) overcame a combined 37 points from the Longwood (1-4) pair of Ciarah Bennett and Dayna Rouse. Bennett scored in double figures for the third straight game, as she finished with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while Rouse scored 18 on 5-of-7 from the floor.

"Credit to Wofford. We took an early lead and they made some adjustments that we struggled with," said Longwood head coach Rebecca Tillett. "I think the most disappointing part for us as a group is that we have more fight than we showed defensively and we didn't show that today."

Wanink, a 2016-17 All-SoCon performer, fueled a 12-4 run over the final 5:14 of the third quarter that saw Wofford stretch its lead from 14 to 22 points. The 25 points from Wanink marked the fifth time on the season that she has eclipsed the 20-point mark, as she added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 29 minutes.

Carman matched her teammate Wanink with 25 points, scoring 14 of her 25 points in the opening half off the bench. She finished the game 9-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-14 from beyond the arc in 28 minutes.

"I'm excited about the consistency but I'd really like for our leadership council to step up and provide some intensity and accountability for how we defend," Tillett said.

The Lancers were led for the second straight game by Bennett, who finished the afternoon with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. The performance from Bennett marked the third straight game that she's finished in double figures, as she has averaged 19.7 points per contest in that span. In addition, Bennett added five assists in Saturday's contest, leading to 10 Longwood points.

The Big South's leader in field goal .647 field-goal percentage, Rouse was once again efficient from the floor, finishing 5-of-7 and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. With the performance, Rouse has scored in double figures for the Lancers in four of the five games on the season.

"Both CeCe [Ciarah Bennett] are developing some consistency in their efficiency," Tillett said.

Akila Smith made her home debut for the Lancers, coming off the bench to finish with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting to go along with five rebounds, an assist and two blocks in nine minutes.

After its fourth straight game at home, Longwood will travel to Norfolk, Va., to face Norfolk State. That game is set for a 6 p.m. opening tip Wednesday, Dec. 12 inside Memorial Hall.

"We need to take a hard look at our defensive efforts," Tillett said. "In this great sport that we play, we don't have a lot of time to feel sorry for ourselves. We have to get back up, figure things out and move on to the next opponent."
