"Huge credit to Virginia Tech and their head coach Kenny Brooks," said Longwood head coach
Rebecca Tillett. "He's doing what we want to do in terms of building their program. In three short years, he's changed the culture and led them to where they are now.
"A big challenge to our players is to keep fighting no matter the circumstance, no matter the opponent. That's something that our team needs to improve on."
Dara Mabrey paced the Hokies in the opening quarter with nine of her 17 points, as Virginia Tech knocked down 6-of-10 shots from beyond the arc. Mabrey and Magarity led the way for a Virginia Tech team that placed five players in double figures, as Trinity Baptiste scored a team-high 22 points and added 11 rebounds while Aisha Shepard added 13 points Taylor Emery pitched in with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists.
The Hokies, who came into the game as the ACC's top defensive team yielding just 54.6 points per game, stifled the Lancers (1-9) on the defensive end of the floor in limiting Longwood to .279 (17-61) shooting.
Hall came off the bench to score in double figures for the third time this season, as she finished with a season-high 15 points. The Cleveland, N.C., product knocked down 6-of-11 from the floor and added one rebound, one assist in 26 minutes.
Meanwhile, Guihon scored in double figures for the fifth time on the season after only doing so just three times as a rookie in 2017-18. She added three rebounds, two assists and her fourth career block.
"It's a coach's dream to have a week of preparation for the start of Big South play," Tillett said. "I'm excited for our staff to begin the journey in the Big South. I think our women are eager to play in the Big South and measure themselves against a new standard."
Longwood will now prepare for the start of Big South play with two of its first three games within the conference to be played on the road with that stretch beginning Jan. 5, 2019 at Winthrop. That game is set for a 2 p.m. opening tip and will precede Longwood's trip to Presbyterian Jan. 8, 2019.
