CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – Two days after Longwood field hockey enjoyed a strong performance in its home finale against Ohio, the Lancers dropped a heartbreaker to Villanova 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon at Villanova Field Hockey Field.
Christen Pennington took advantage of a break after Riley Dolan's initial shot was blocked and bounced directly to Pennington, who tallied the game winner. The goal for Pennington was her fourth of the season and helped the Wildcats (6-8) overcome a nine-save performance from Longwood goalkeeper
Katie Wyman.
"Villanova is a tough team and we played pretty well at times," said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. "We struggled at the finish but it was a good test for us which is what we need as we head towards the end of the season and the conference tournament. We know that we can play better, we're going to work on some things before our next game against Georgetown."
Wyman was aided by the backline of
Rio Weber,
Mia Leeman and
Clara Meschini, while
Briana Greene scored Longwood's(8-5) only goal off a penalty corner from
Charlotte Wilm.
Playing near her hometown of Waverton, Pa., Wyman put on a show in goal for Longwood, putting together her fifth performance of the season with at least nine saves.
After recording her first career hat trick Friday against Ohio,
Leonie Verstraete was limited to 20 minutes due to injury while the Lancers were also without the services of Wilm for the final half of the game.
Abby Siana answered Greene's goal for Villanova less than four minutes into the second half.
Olivia Wawryzniak took a game-high six shots with three of those on target, as she was one of seven Lancers to tally at least one of Longwood's 15 total shots.
Erika Miller earned the win in goal for Villanova, making five saves.
Longwood will continue its stretch of three straight games on the road to close out the regular season Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m., as the Lancers travel to Washington, D.C., to face Georgetown.
