BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's Summer Price scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Camels to a come-from-behind 58-48 win over the Longwood women's basketball team Saturday afternoon inside Gore Arena.
Price's 21 points helped Campbell survive a Longwood team that made .706 of their field goals in the first half and held Campbell without a field goal in a first quarter that Longwood outscored the Camels by a 18-5 margin. In addition, the effort by the Camels held off a Longwood squad that was limited to seven players.
"This was another game where we really competed," said Longwood head coach
Bill Reinson. "The final score doesn't indicate how close this game actually was. As the game progressed, I think we wore down a little bit on both ends."
Price, the Big South's second-leading scorer averaging 15.7 points per game, scored 18 of her 21 points in the second-half to secure her seventh game of 20 or more points. Price shot 7-of-17 from the field, including a 4-of-9 mark from three-point range, while adding four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Longwood (3-16, 1-7 Big South) opened the game on a 12-0 run over the opening 5:45 while making each of their first five shots of the game against a Campbell (11-8, 4-4 Big South) squad that came in with the fifth ranked scoring defense in the NCAA. That run was also aided by a strong defensive effort from the Lancers that forced the Camels to miss their first 14 shots of the game.
"The focus we had defensively in the first half just wasn't as sharp late in the game and it cost us some timely baskets," Reinson said. "Offensively, we were sloppy at times and didn't have enough great possessions."
That offensive first-half surge was led by Spradlin who finished with a team-high 14 points for Longwood, as the sharp-shooter made 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. The game for Spradlin is her sixth performance in double figures, second on the team trailing only the seven double figure performances from
Autumn Childress.
After Longwood took a 30-20 lead to the locker room, the Camels came out on a 13-3 run to draw even before taking their first lead of the game midway through the fourth quarter. On the shoulders of Price's 10 fourth quarter points, the Camels extended their lead to nine points with 1:38 remaining. However, a pair of triples from Spradlin and
Casey Ripp brought the never-say-die Lancers back to within four with 56 seconds left, before Campbell was able to close the game by hitting 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch
Micaela Ellis matched her season-high of six assists to move within 15 assists of Ann Callaham for eighth-place all-time on Longwood's all-time assist charts. Ellis' six assists led directly to 15 Longwood points, as she added six points, six rebounds and two steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Kristina Antonenko finished one point shy of collecting her first double-double at the Division I level, finishing with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting to go along with a career-high 10 rebounds.
"I couldn't be more pleased with the ladies' effort," Reinson said. "We're already a very good team. Now, we need to start translating this hard work into some wins."
Longwood will play its second straight game away from Willett Hall Tuesday, Jan. 30, as it wraps up the first half of the conference slate with a clash at Winthrop. That game is set for a 7 p.m. opening tip inside the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C.
