HIGH POINT, N.C. – Hat tricks from Samantha Brown, Erin Ilchuk and Emory Gaeng fueled a red-hot High Point women's lacrosse team to a 19-8 victory over Longwood Saturday afternoon for their ninth-straight victory.
Longwood (5-8, 1-2 Big South) drew first blood with freshman
Kaitlin Luccarelli's 23
rd goal of the season and junior
Riley Dolan's 12th for an early 2-0 lead on the road. Both Luccarelli and Dolan assisted on their counterpart's goal.
The lead was short-lived as High Point (9-3, 3-0) answered with two goals in 30 seconds to tie the game, jumpstarting a 14-1 run to close out the final 26 minutes of the first half. High Point showcased the Big South's second-leading offense as six different goal-scorers contributed to the Panthers' first-half outburst, including three from Brown and two from Gaeng and Ilchek.
Saturday's home win was the fifth in as many games for the Panthers, who have reeled-off nine consecutive victories, three coming in Big South play.
After the early 2-0 hole, High Point controlled most facets of the contest including shots (39-17), ground balls (22-21), draw controls (22-6) and turnovers (18-23).
Longwood was led by Luccarelli and Dolan Saturday afternoon, both finding the back of the net twice and adding an assist. Big South Freshman of the Week
Lexi Davis dished out two assists in the losing effort, extending her points streak to 12-straight to begin her career in the blue and white.
Charleigh Kondas,
Molly Barkman,
Cassie Angeles and
Dana Joss all added one goal each in Longwood's eight-goal day. Saturday's loss was the second-straight single digit outing after exploding for 19 in a road triumph at Radford on April 1 to start conference play 1-0.
Kondas' lone goal of the day ended High Point's 13-goal stretch at the 2:00 mark of the first half. Dolan's second goal of the day began a Lancer four-goal run in the second half to bring it to a 15-7 contest before High Point ended the game with four of the last five tallies.
In the second-half run from Longwood, four different goal scorers contributed including Dolan, Luccarelli, Barkman and Joss.
Luccarelli's three-point day gives her a team-leading 35 on the season while Dolan collected her 29th point on 13 goals and 16 assists.
In between the pipes,
Imani West collected three ground balls, forced a Panther turnover and racked up 11 saves. West's 11-saves were the sixth double digit performance from the junior goalkeeper, tying her career-mark of six last season.
Longwood returns to Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field for back-to-back home contests to close out the home slate, starting Wednesday against another undefeated Big South team in Campbell.
First draw on Wednesday is set for 3 p.m. against the Fightin' Camels before a showdown with Winthrop on Saturday, April 15 on Senior Day when
Chelsea DiIonno and
Madelynn Rollins will be honored before the game.
