ROCK HILL, S.C. – Senior southpaw
Elizabeth McCarthy became Longwood's all-time career strikeout leader and moved into the top 10 in Big South history in career punchouts, as Longwood dropped a pair of one run games in its Saturday doubleheader against Winthrop at Terry Field.
Winthrop scored three runs in the seventh inning and erased a pair of Longwood two-run leads to earn the series win with a 5-4 victory, before taking the series sweep with a 3-2 win in the second game of the afternoon.
Entering the day one strikeout shy of matching Briana Wells' 572 career strikeouts, McCarthy tied and passed her with a pair of strikeouts in the second inning. With the same strikeout the Dunnsville, Va., product passed Wells, McCarthy moved into the top 10 in career K's in the Big South record book.
McCarthy has finished with at least 145 strikeouts in each of her three full seasons at Longwood en route to being named back-to-back Big South Pitcher of the Year and two-time NFCA All-Southeast Region. McCarthy is one of two Lancers in the 500-strikeout club and sits tied with Jennifer Potts for third all-time in career wins with 64.
The win gives Winthrop (20-17, 6-2 Big South) its fourth straight win to help the Eagles move into second-place in the conference standings. With the three-game sweep, Winthrop becomes the first current Big South school to sweep the Lancers (12-19, 1-5 Big South) in Longwood's five seasons in the league, as Coastal Carolina moved to the Sun Belt ahead of the 2016-17 academic year.
Kaylynn Batten and
Krista Kelly led the Lancers at the plate with three hits each, while Kelly drove in a pair of runs in the first game of the day.
Justina Augustine,
Kelsey Sweeney and
Karleigh Donovan also had a pair of hits throughout the afternoon.
Longwood looks to bounce back and seeks its fourth straight win over an ACC opponent Tuesday, April 4 at North Carolina. The rematch of Longwood's nine-inning win in the NCAA Regional to advance to the NCAA Regional Championship is set for a 4 p.m., first pitch and will be broadcast on Kickin' Country 92.9 WVHL.
Winthrop 5, Longwood 4
Winthrop freshman Ashley
Westbrooks drove home the tying run with a two-run double and then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Winthrop to a 5-4 comeback win over Longwood in the second game of the series Saturday afternoon at Terry Field.
The loss spoiled a historic day for Lancer ace McCarthy, who struck out four over 5.2 innings of two-run ball to break Longwood's all-time strikeouts record. McCarthy, the two-time reigning Big South Pitcher of the Year, passed Briana Wells' mark of 572 career
punchouts to take the top spot on the list.
Despite McCarthy's milestone,
Westbrooks stole the spotlight in the seventh. The Eagles third baseman came to the plate with Winthrop trailing 4-2 after a two-run top of the seventh from the Lancers (12-18, 1-4 Big South) and tied it up with a two-run double down the left field line. She came around to score on the next at bat when Morgan Lowers, who dropped down an infield single, drew a rundown between first and second, giving
Westbrooks just enough time to cross the plate.
Â
Westbrook's game-tying double was the third straight hit in the seventh from the Eagles (19-17, 5-2 Big South), who started the rally with a leadoff single from
Shayna Covington and a double from
Maddie Antone. Westbrook's two-bagger plated both runners before Lowers drew the throw on her way to second to set up the game-winning run.
Â
The Eagles did all of their scoring in the final three innings, overcoming deficits of 2-0 and 4-2 with an offensive attack that belted out 13 hits, including a game-tying home run from Leah Young in the bottom of the sixth.
Westbrooks' game-winning run came with McCarthy on the mound but handed the loss to Lancer
redshirt junior Sydney
Mundell, who started the seventh and allowed the first three
baserunners to reach.
Â
Longwood's late rally came in the form of a clutch two-out, two-run triple from
Kelsey Sweeney in the top of the seventh but was undone in Winthrop's next turn at the plate. Sweeney finished 1-for-4, while
Krista Kelly, who scored the go-ahead run on Sweeney's three-bagger, went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Winthrop 3, Longwood 2
Winthrop's Morgan Lowers drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice, as Majette tossed a complete-game for her third victory of the weekend to lead the Eagles to a series sweep over Longwood with a 3-2 win in the second game of the day.
Longwood erased a two-run lead in the top-half of the inning courtesy of a
Glenn Walters home run, before Lowers knocked in the go-ahead RBI.
???????Majette allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks in the game, striking out three batters as well.
Sydney Gay (9-10) took the loss for the Lancers, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits, while adding four strikeouts.
???????
Justina Augustine was 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, marking her second game throughout the weekend with a pair of hits. She was one of six different Lancers to get a hit.
Paige Haley and Maddie Antone each went 2-for-3 in the game with Antone adding a pair of RBI.
???????Antone got the Eagles on the board with a one-out single to right field to bring home Haley, before she followed suit two innings later with an RBI double.
