Extended Run Lifts UMBC Past Lancers 17-5

Retrievers Fire 47 Shots in Triumph Over Longwood

CATONSVILLE, Md. – After a Dana Joss goal at the 12:53 mark of the first half tied the game at 3-3, UMBC went on a 13-goal run to pull away from the Longwood women's lacrosse team 17-5 Thursday afternoon from a chilly UMBC Stadium.

UMBC (5-3) senior midfielder Jennie Milligan scored her first of three goals to break the 3-3 tie and jumpstart a 13-0 run that stretched over 18 minutes and saw eight different Retrievers find the twine.

The Retrievers got off to a quick start, scoring two goals in the opening five minutes and firing seven shots before the Lancers' first attempt. UMBC outshot the Lancers 47-9 on the day with 28 coming in the opening 30 minutes.

UMBC also controlled most facets of the contest, scooping up more ground balls (15-14), winning more draw controls (14-9) and committing less turnovers (9-17).

Big South Freshman of the Week honoree Molly Barkman led the Lancer attack with two goals, her second-consecutive multi-goal game. Barkman, who leads Longwood (4-4) rookies in points, tallied her third multi-goal performance of the season to back her four-goal game against St. Bonaventure.

Joss' game-tying goal in the first half was the third of her career, all three goals coming in the past two contests.

Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Roberts added to her breakout campaign, scoring her 17th goal of the season. Cassie Angeles also tickled the twine on her lone shot of the day, tallying her 12th goal of the year. Roberts' 21 points on the year lead a Lancer attack that sits atop the Big South in shot percentage with a .456 clip.

In between the pipes, Imani West notched 13 saves and corralled a team-high five ground balls. The 13 saves secured the second-consecutive and fourth total double-digit save performance by West in 2017.

After the 13-save performance, West anchors a Lancer defense that leads the Big South in save percentage (.450), and ranks second in goals allowed average (13.12) and saves per contest (10.75).

UMBC was led by hat tricks from Carolyn Jamison, Sam Nolan and Milligan. Jamison also added two assists and picked up two ground balls.

Thursday's contest was the first since April 1989, and the Retrievers lead the all-time series 7-0.

Longwood stays on the road for one more contest before ending the nonconference slate from Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field. The Lancers take on St. Francis (Pa.) Sunday in Loretto, Pa. with first draw set for 1 p.m.
