Lancers Take Seesaw 13-10 Victory Over The Mount

Three Goals in Last Three Minutes Seal Road Triumph

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Longwood junior Riley Dolan scored her third goal of the day with 2:54 left in the game, breaking a 10-10 deadlock and giving the Lancers a lead they would hold until the final whistle for a 13-10 win over Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon at Waldron Stadium.

After Mount St. Mary's freshman Kate Kinsella knotted the game up at 10-10 with just under five minutes to play, Dolan answered with her third goal of the day and second hat trick in as many games, starting a three-goal run to close out the contest that gave the Lancers (3-2) their third straight win.

"This was an exciting game and well-deserved win," said fifth-year head coach Elaine Jones, whose Lancers have gutted out two of their past three wins by no more than three goals. "We fell behind twice and had to battle back to take the lead."

Dolan, a native of Northfield, N.J., got the Lancers' seven-goal second half started in the blink of an eye as she found the back of the net less than a minute out of the break, snapping a 6-6 tie. Sunday's contest was the second straight hat trick for Dolan after a four-goal, four-assist performance against Howard on Feb. 22.

Dolan was joined by Stephanie Roberts and Cassie Angeles as the top three scorers, all finishing with three goals apiece.

After falling behind 9-7 with 16:14 to play in regulation, Angeles, who played hero in Longwood's comeback against George Washington on Feb. 18, found the net twice in a three-goal stretch that gave the Lancers a 10-9 advantage at the 6:58 mark of the decisive second period.

"Our defense came up with multiple stops giving our attack the opportunity to produce on the offensive end," Jones said.

Goalkeeper Imani West, coming off a career- best 19 saves and an Big South Defensive Player of the Week award, collected seven saves and anchored a defense that forced the Mountaineers into 21 turnovers while seizing 20 ground balls.

Roberts played well on both ends of the field, causing a team-high three turnovers and scoring three goals on the offensive side. She tallied her third hat trick of the season with less than a minute to play, icing the game and making it a 12-10 advantage before freshman Molly Barkman sealed it with her second goal of the year at the :12 mark.

Roberts also led the team in draw controls for the second time in the last three contests with three on Sunday.

"Our mental toughness and ability to execute our game plan really carried us today," Jones said.

After scoring four goals against Howard, freshman Kaitlin Luccarelli had another career performance scoring twice and assisting three more times, and picked up a team-best four ground balls as well as causing two turnovers. Each of her three assists came on potential go-ahead or game-tying goals for the Lancer attack.

Fellow freshman and Parker, Colo., native, Lexi Davis, had a career day as well, assisting on four goals with three coming in the second half. Davis came through in the clutch with assists on the first two Lancer goals after they had fallen behind 9-7, and then assisting on Barkman's final tally with 12 seconds left.

Mount St. Mary's (0-1) was led by Kinsella's three-goal day, while Taylor Carhart and Carly Miller added two goals each in the Mountaineers' season-opening loss.

Longwood hits the road again for a showdown with Commonwealth foe James Madison for a late-night affair in Harrisonburg, Va. First draw is set to go up at 7 p.m. from Sentara Park.
