Riley Wins No. 700 in DH Split at UNCG Invite

Longwood Earns 4-3 Win Over George Washington, Falls to UNCG, 7-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Longwood softball head coach Kathy Riley captured her 700th career win, as Longwood split Saturday's doubleheader at the UNCG Invitational with a 4-3 win over George Washington and a 7-2 loss to UNCG.

In her 20th season at Longwood, Riley owns 700 career wins throughout a legendary 24-year career at Longwood and Mount Olive. The back-to-back Big South Coach of the Year and two-time CVAC Coach of the Year, Riley has guided the Lancers into uncharted territory, with 621 of her 700 wins coming with the blue and white.

Throughout her Longwood career, Riley has never posted a record below the .500 mark while leading the Lancers to 12 30-win seasons and a 40-win season in three of the past four years, including a trip to the NCAA Regionals in 2013, '15 and '16.

Kaylynn Batten enjoyed a 4-for-5 day at the plate with an RBI to lead the Lancers (3-8) and extend her reached base streak to 28 consecutive games dating back to the 2016 season. Jelly Eaton enjoyed the most productive day of her young career, hitting a pair of home runs in each of Longwood's two games. In addition, Kasey Carr had a trio of hits, including a two out, two RBI double in the first game of the day that proved to be the eventual game-winning run.

Sydney Gay (3-3) earned her third straight win in the circle in the opening game of the day. Throughout that three-game stretch, Gay allowed just three earned runs and holds a 0.95 ERA with 16 strikeouts.

Longwood looks to bounce back Sunday, as the Lancers will once again play a doubleheader. The first game against George Washington is set for a 10 a.m., first pitch, while game two against UNCG is set for a 3 p.m., start.

Longwood 4, George Washington 3

A two run double in the fourth inning from Kasey Carr and a complete-game performance from sophomore Sydney Gay handed Riley her 700th career coaching victory, as the Lancers earned a 4-3 win over George Washington to open play in the UNCG Invitational.

A fourth inning double from Carr provided the eventual winning run, as she plated Krista Kelly and Glenn Walters with a two-out double to left center.

Carr's two-RBI double and Jelly Eaton's first career home run an inning earlier backed Gay's third consecutive victory in the circle, as the Carrollton, Va., product went seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. She also added four strikeouts, while throwing 87 pitches, 59 for strikes.

"We're excited to get off on the right foot this weekend," Riley said. "We had some good things happen in that Jelly Eaton and Kasey Carr were both able to contribute offensively. Sydney and the defense hung tough the entire game and did well with all of the challenges George Washington threw out way."

Kaylynn Batten also added a pair of hits in the game to go along with an RBI.

Sarah Costlow took the loss for George Washington, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits and a pair of walks. She also added five strikeouts.

UNCG 7, Longwood 2

Tournament host UNCG hit four home runs with three coming in the final two innings en route to taking the night cap, 7-2, over Longwood.

"We let the game get away from us after getting a 2-1 lead," Riley said. "We'll have to practice harder and play better."

Rachel McClaskey led the offensive surge for the Spartans (7-4) with a pair of extra base hits with a home run and a double. Her fifth inning RBI double proved to be the difference in the ball game, as she brought home Rebecca Kale.

Senior Elizabeth McCarthy (0-3) was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on five hits, while walking a pair of batters and adding five to her strikeout total in five innings. Jenna Carnes came on to relieve McCarthy in the sixth and gave up three runs on one hit.

Batten led the Lancer offensive effort with a pair of hits in a 2-for-2 performance, while Eaton added her second home run of the day and Carr had a hit in her second straight game.

Alicia Bazonski (5-2) earned the win allowing two runs, one earned, in a complete game effort. She also added five strikeouts to the performance.
