Lancers Gut Out 11-9 Win Over George Washington

Angeles Provides Second-Half Spark With Three Goals

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood sophomore Cassie Angeles scored the game-tying and game-winning goals over the game's final four minutes to push Longwood past George Washington 11-9 Saturday afternoon at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field at the Longwood Athletics Complex.

With Longwood (1-2) trailing 9-8 with 3:58 to play, Angeles played up some late-game heroics, punching in her second goal of the game to even the score, and less than two minutes later driving home the game-winner on a pass from freshman Dana Joss to give the blue and white a win in their home opener.

"It felt great to get that win after two losses," said Angeles, who notched her second game-winning goal as a Lancer. "We definitely learned from our mistakes from the second half, and the comeback is always greater than the setback."

Angeles scored a team-high four goals and dished an assist to back a 19-save effort from junior goalkeeper Imani West. Her game-tying goal at the four-minute mark halted a 4-0 George Washington run that put the Colonials (0-3) ahead 9-8 with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation.

"This was a great team win," said fifth-year head coach Elaine Jones. "After the last loss, we really talked through what we needed to get done both mentally and physically."

West's 19 saves surpassed a previous career-high of 14 she set last season in back-to-back contests against Big South foes High Point and Campbell to close out the 2016 regular season. She also picked up eight ground balls to go along with her 19 saves.

The 19 saves from West were also good for second all-time in single game saves, just behind former Lancer Christian Acker's 20 against Louisville in 2015.

"Imani [West] had a monster game and really came up with a lot of amazing saves," Jones said. "Our defense did a great job in front of her in limiting George Washington's clean looks at the goal."

During a second-half run that saw the Colonials score five of the first seven goals, George Washington forced the Lancers into eight of their nine second-half turnovers, creating enough opportunities to capture their first lead since an early 2-0 start.

Coming into Saturday's contest, Navy and Lafayette had combined to fire away 82 shots in the first two games preparing the young Lancer squad for the onslaught of 34 from the Colonials.

"I think that helped our defense," West said. "We were used to facing a lot of shots in the first two games, so we were prepared when [George Washington] came down on our end of the field."

Stephanie Roberts added three goals for Longwood, her team-leading sixth of the season, and won two draw controls while freshman attacker Kaitlin Luccarelli notched her first two career goals, both coming in the first 30 minutes of action.

Freshman Molly Barkman racked up five points, four assists and one goal, for the blue and white with her fourth assist coming on Angeles' game-tying goal. She also won two draw controls for the Lancers, while sophomore Allie Ipkovich corralled two as well.

"It was awesome to see our offense explode and put up more than three goals," Jones said. "Cassie [Angeles] and Stephanie [Roberts] came through with some clutch goals, which will be great for their confidence."

The Lancer attack was able to stave-off a George Washington offense that scored five of the first seven second-half goals, led by Michaela Lynch's team-leading fifth goal of the campaign. Lynch also had two assists for George Washington to lead the team with four points, while Bailey Forcier and Shea Cassidy assisted on two other Colonials goals.

"Although the players did the work on the field today, the players cheering for them helped with the preparation all week," Jones said. "Without everyone contributing, we would not have been able to execute our game plan as well today so credit goes to the whole team."

The Lancers stay at home for their next contest against their second-consecutive Washington, D.C. foe Howard. First draw is set to go up at 3 p.m. from Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.
