COLUMBIA, S.C. – A four-run first inning and a dominant one hit, six inning performance from Ohio pitcher Savannah Jo Dorsey led the Bobcats to a 5-0 win over the Longwood softball team Sunday morning in the Carolina Classic at Carolina Softball Stadium.
Â
After pitching six scoreless innings and allowing just one hit in Friday's game against the two teams, Dorsey was fantastic once again in the circle for the Bobcats. The 2016 MAC Pitcher of the Year once again was dynamic in the circle, allowing just one hit for the second time in a three-day span over six innings of work. Dorsey (3-0) allowed just one Longwood baserunner to reach base, while posting 10 strikeouts.
Â
Dorsey combined with Desirae Villanueva to post a two-hit shutout, as Villanueva pitched the seventh inning and allowed one Longwood hit.
Â
Dorsey (3-0) was aided by an offensive onslaught that saw the Bobcats notch 11 hits, with seven different players recording at least one hit. Alex Day led the way with a trio of hits, along with a run scored. Natalie Alvarez also finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Â
Kaylynn Batten recorded her third hit in four games throughout the weekend with a double in the second inning.
Â
"It was a tough weekend due to extremely poor hitting," said Longwood head coach
Kathy Riley. "We were under lots of pressure to play perfectly in every area because we didn't score runs."
Â
Sydney Gay (0-2) got the start after giving up just two runs in 13.0 innings Saturday. Gay took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits before being replaced by
Elizabeth McCarthy in the bottom of the first inning. McCarthy came on in relief and tossed 5.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on six hits. She also struck out four different batters.
Â
Sydney Mundell made her 2017 debut, throwing one scoreless inning with a strikeout.
Â
In an inning that saw all nine Bobcats come up to bat, Ohio (4-1) scored four runs on five hits and an error. After the Bobcats loaded the bases to start the inning, a Natalie Alvarez two RBI single back up the middle gave Ohio an early 2-0 advantage. That was followed by an RBI single from Morgan Geno, before Madison Claytor notched her eighth RBI of the weekend with a double to left center.
Â
After loading the bases once again in the third inning, Taylor Saxton increased the Ohio lead to 5-0 with an RBI groundout to the right side to score Deanna Cole from third base.
Â
"I only know of one approach and that is to figure out how we can get better," Riley said.
Longwood (0-4) will have five days to regroup for its second tournament of the season hosted by Troy University. The Lancers open the tournament Friday, Feb. 17 against Samford at 1:30 p.m., ET, before playing the host Trojans at 6:30 p.m., ET.
