Bulldogs Control Glass in Win Over Lancers

Longwood’s Khaila Hall and Ashlee Jones Finish in Double Figures in 80-53 Loss

FARMVILLE, Va. – UNC Asheville used 21 second chance points and controlled the boards with a 55-18 rebounding advantage en route to an 80-53 win over Longwood inside Willett Hall on a snowy Saturday afternoon.

A 20-point performance from Khaila Webb, as well as 17 and 12 from Tianna Knuckles and Chatori Major paced the Bulldog attack, as the reigning Big South regular season and tournament champions secured their first win in conference play. The win for UNC Asheville (7-6, 1-1 Big South) also snapped a four-game losing streak it had entering the game.

Longwood (3-10, 0-2 Big South) sees its two-game home winning streak come to the end, as the Lancers were limited to .364 shooting from the field, marking their lowest shooting percentage since their home opener against West Virginia Tech.

A fast start helped the Bulldogs over the opening 13 minutes of the game helped the Bulldogs open a 19-point advantage with seven minutes to go in the second quarter. That run was fueled by a Bulldog defense that held the Lancers to a 2-for-19 start from the floor.

Webb's 20-point day in which she was 7-for-14 from the floor and added six assists, marked her second 20 point game of the season for Asheville's leading scorer. It marks the third time on the season she's registered at least 20 points and extends her streak in double figures to three straight games.

Asheville's KJ Weaver finished three points shy of a double-double performance, finishing with a game-high 10 rebounds to go along seven points and two blocks. Weaver was one of five Bulldogs to pull down at least five rebounds, as Asheville grabbed 22 on the offensive end of the floor which led to 21 second-chance points.

Pacing the Lancer offensive effort was Khaila Hall and Ashlee Jones, who each finished the afternoon with 10 points. In addition, Hall had three steals and a block, as the Cleveland, N.C., native has blocked at least one shot in each of the past three games. Micaela Ellis recorded six assists for the fifth time in her Longwood career, marking the fifth time this season that a Longwood guard has registered six assists in a game.

Longwood will look to snap its two-game losing streak and win its first conference game Tuesday when it hosts Gardner-Webb. The game will be Education Day, as Longwood will welcome students from area schools. Tipoff is set for 11:15 a.m. inside Willett Hall.
