ROCK HILL, S.C. – Four double figure scorers for Winthrop outmatched a pair of double-doubles from Longwood's
Eboni Gilliam and
Autumn Childress, as the Eagles scored 27 points in the final quarter en route to a 78-72 win over visiting Longwood Tuesday night inside the Winthrop Coliseum.
Â
In a game that featured nine lead changes and a pair of ties, Winthrop erased an eight-point Longwood second-half lead and never trailed in the final 8:47 of the game. Eagle senior and fourth leading scorer in the Big South Erica Williams tallied a team-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
Williams was one of four Eagles in double figures, as she was joined by Marissa Cantrell (18), Danyael Goodhope (14) and Naima Jackson (11) to erase a pair of Longwood efforts that saw Gilliam record her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds. In her second game back from injury after missing 11, Childress recorded her first double-double of the campaign with 13 points and 27 rebounds.
Â
A Preseason All-Big South First-Team selection, Williams matched Gilliam point-for-point, as the Winthrop senior finished four assists shy of a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and a block in 39 minutes. Goodhope came to Williams' aid in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of her 14 points in the game and helping the Eagles make .667 (8-12) of their shots in the final period.
Â
With the win, Winthrop (2-17, 1-6 Big South) ends its 17-game losing streak, while Longwood (3-14, 0-7 Big South) drops its season-high seventh straight. In addition, it marks the end of a two-game win streak the Lancers had over the Eagles dating back to last season.
Â
A product of Richmond, Va., Gilliam moves into second-place within the conference  with four double-doubles on the campaign and is one of 11 players to record multiple double-doubles on the season. The 27 point outburst from the senior forward surpassed her career-high of 22 points last season at Campbell. Gilliam becomes the fourth different Lancer to record a 20-point game this season, joining
Kemari Jones,
Dayna Rouse and
Kate Spradlin.
Â
Coming off an eight-point outing in her first game back after an injury held her out of the lineup for 11 games, Childress secured her second career double-double. The Midlothian, Va., product added a pair of assists in 35 minutes in the outing.
Â
In addition,
Micaela Ellis continues to be a spark plug for the Lancers, finishing two points shy of her first career double-double with eight points, and a career-best 11 assists to extend her streak of games with three-plus assists to nine games. Â Ellis' 11 assists led directly to 28 Longwood points, including six of Longwood's eight three-pointers. The 11 assists from Ellis marks the most by a Lancer since
Raven Williams recorded 10 against Charleston Southern. In addition to her 11 assists, Ellis, Longwood's lone captain this season, picked up four steals and had just two turnovers.
Â
Longwood returns to Willett Hall for the first of two straight home games Saturday against Charleston Southern. The first-ever women's basketball game to be broadcast inside Willett Hall is set for a 2 p.m., tip with a ceremony honoring the program's all-time winningest coach Shirley Duncan prior to the start of the game.
