WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A three-point night from William & Mary forward Antonio Bustamante lifted the Tribe past Longwood, 2-0, Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Bustamante provided the lone assist on Reilly Maw's first-half goal and scored a goal of his own in the second period, as William & Mary (3-1-0) handed the Lancers (1-1-1) their first loss of the 2016 campaign.
"We gave as good of an effort as we have in parts of the game, but hurt ourselves by not taking care of the ball," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "William & Mary is a good team that can hurt you in transition and I felt that was the difference."
Longwood senior goalkeeper
Carlos Canas (1-1-1) posted three saves on the night. He was replaced in the 88th minute by
Lance Da Silva, who made his first collegiate save. Meanwhile, Phil Breno (3-1-0) picked up his second straight clean sheet and third win of the season, making three saves.
Longwood had control in the early portion of the game with
Mo Jalloh recording the first two shots of the contest in the opening nine minutes, before William & Mary responded with five of the next seven.
The Tribe took the initial 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, as Bustamante fed the ball to Maw. He was able to get behind the Longwood back line and beat senior Canas on the right side for his first goal of the season.
William & Mary doubled its lead in the 59th minute with the second goal of the season for Bustamante, as he took a cross from Ryder Bell on the right side and one-timed the shot past Canas. William Erskay also got a secondary helper on the goal.
Looking for a late second-half rally, Longwood outshot the Tribe by a 7-5 margin over the game's final 25 minutes, paced by two shots apiece from
Finnlay Wyatt and
Dan Campos.
Jalloh and Wyatt led the Lancers with three shots each, accounting for a Longwood attack that posted 11 total shots, compared to 15 for William & Mary.
After completing its first three games of the season on the road and coming away with a 1-1-1 record, Longwood returns to the Athletics Complex for its home-opener Saturday, Sept. 10 against Newberry College. The game is set for a 6 p.m., kick off.
