FARMVILLE, Va. – Three second-half goals and a combined shutout performance from senior goalkeeper
Carlos Canas and freshman
David Hay led the Longwood men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Newberry College in its home-opener Saturday at the Athletics Complex.
On a night where Longwood peppered the Newberry goal with 27 shots, 17 on target, the Lancers received second-half goals from
Mo Jalloh,
Finnlay Wyatt and
Sepehr Harandi. The 27 shots is the most the Lancers have recorded in a game since registering 29 shots against Howard last season.
The win for Longwood (2-1-1) once again moves the squad above the .500 mark and marks the second straight season where they captured a win in their home opener.
"We're happy to get a win and we were able to protect our home field," said head coach
Jon Atkinson. "We struggled to find a rhythm, but credit Newberry for making it difficult for us. The guys showed great character in the second half after coming out a bit sluggish in the opening period."
Canas (2-1-1) picked up the win, making two saves on a night where Newberry was limited to 11 shots attempts. He was relieved in the 84th minute by freshman
David Hay, who made his collegiate debut and was credited with his first save in the closing minutes.
"Carlos is a quality keeper, but I thought the guys in front of him did a good job holding their defensive shape," Atkinson said. "That's something we've worked on in practice and it was definitely a team effort."
Brad Dixon (2-1) took the loss for Newberry (2-1) despite a 14-save performance on Longwood's 27 shots.
Following a first-half where he registered a game-high five shots, Jalloh opened the floodgates for the Lancers in the 48th minute with his first strike of the season. He was fed a pass from
Connor Rea to the left side of the 25-yard box and rifled a shot to the far post.
"It felt really good to get my first of the season," Jalloh said. "We came out and played our game in the second half, after a sluggish first half, and the momentum really shifted after we scored the first goal."
Wyatt doubled the Lancer lead in the 79th minute, after receiving a pass in space from
Dan Campos on the right side of the box. He would fire a shot to the far post for his first of the season, as Campos registered his first assist of the 2016 campaign.
Two minutes later, Harandi scored his first career goal, as he finished a cross from the right side off the foot of
Zach Corcoran.
Longwood controlled the pace of play throughout the first half with a 10-3 shot advantage.
Mo Jalloh peppered the Wolves goaltender Brad Dixon with five shots, including two shots on goal.
Longwood looks to take its momentum from Saturday's win into its midweek clash at ACC-foe Virginia Tech, set for Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., in Blacksburg, Va. That game will be part of a doubleheader with the Longwood women's soccer team.
