FAIRFAX, Va. – A late game-tying goal from redshirt-senior
Zach Corcoran in the 83rd minute led Longwood to a 1-1 tie with George Mason Saturday night at George Mason Stadium.
Looking for the equalizer with less than eight minutes to play in regulation, Corcoran rifled a shot from the right side into the right corner of the goal, past Patriot goalkeeper Steffen Kraus. It marked the first of the season for the 5-10, 160 pound redshirt-senior midfielder, as he was set up on the play by
Mo Jalloh.
"This was a well-earned point on the road against a team that is looking to get their season started," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "I saw great purpose in our fight back and I felt we thoroughly deserved a result, showing great character."
Without the services of redshirt-sophomore
Willy Miezan for the season with a knee injury, the Longwood midfield have stepped up to score four of Longwood's five goals through two games. Against the Patriots, the Lancer midfield combined for eight of Longwood's 11 shots with four of those on goal.
That goal from Corcoran canceled a Longwood own goal prior to halftime in the 34th minute where George Mason (0-2-1) took a 1-0 advantage.
"We didn't have much concern in the game until we gave up an own goal and fought for the remainder of the half," Atkinson said.
Longwood senior goalkeeper
Carlos Canas (1-0-1) started in goal for the Lancers, making five saves on 14 George Mason. He was opposed by Kraus (0-2-1), who made three saves on 11 Longwood shots.
With its 1-0-1 record to open the season, Longwood is off to its best start without a loss in the Division I era.
Longwood completes its three-game road swing Tuesday, Sept. 6 at William & Mary. The game is set for a 7 p.m. kick off in Williamsburg, Va.
