Longwood Makes History Again With Second NCAA Win

Lancers Top Princeton 2-1 in NCAA Regional, Avoid Elimination

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Longwood's historic 2016 campaign continued Saturday afternoon with the program's second NCAA Regional win, a 2-1 victory over Princeton in an elimination game of the NCAA Regional in Harrisonburg.

The win, which echoed Longwood's historic victory over Virginia Tech in the 2015 Knoxville Regional that was the first Division I NCAA Tournament win in school history, sets up a rematch against North Carolina Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The win in Longwood's first-ever matchup against Princeton turned in Longwood's (39-19) favor in the fifth inning when Glenn Walters drew a bases-loaded walk to send in the go-ahead run in the form of Emily Murphy.

Freshman Sydney Gay finished off a dominant performance from starter Elizabeth McCarthy with 2.1 innings of shutout ball to give the Lancers a win in an NCAA Regional for the second straight year. Longwood's vaunted pitching duo held the Tigers (23-28) to just four hits over seven innings to set up another elimination matchup against North Carolina Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Gay (19-7) picked up the win, coming on in relief of Elizabeth McCarthy to throw 2.1 innings and add two strikeouts without allowing a run. Prior to that, McCarthy only allowed one run and also finished with five strikeouts in her 4.2 innings of work in the circle.

Karleigh Donovan led the Lancers at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance, including her seventh blast of the season when she tied the game with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning. Donovan's long ball erased the 1-0 lead the Tigers took in the top of the fourth on a Keeley Walsh home run.
Shanna Christian (6-11) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three of the batters she faced.

Walters drew a bases loaded walk one inning later, as Princeton walked three straight batters following a two-out double from Murphy to give Longwood the 2-1 advantage.
