FARMVILLE, Va. – On a night when McHugh and Butler combined for 10 goals and eight assists to move atop Longwood's record books, Longwood women's lacrosse glided past Radford for a dominating 21-7 victory Wednesday evening at the Athletics complex.
Â
McHugh, who moved into sole possession of first place on the program's single-season points chart, scored 6 goal and added 7 assists to give her 81 points on the season and help Longwood (7-7, 3-2 BSC) end its two-game skid entering the game. Butler, whom McHugh past on her way to the top, also broke the single-season points record with each of her four goals and assist before the half to give her 79 points on the year.
Â
"I was glad to see everyone contribute today in executing a well-rounded team win," said Longwood head coach
Elaine Jones. "I'm really proud of Sarah and Katie for breaking the records. The dedication they've shown to improving their offensive skill every year is a testament to what can be achieved with a competitive attitude, hard work and a determination to be the best."
Â
A product of Melbourne, Australia, Butler was the first to make her move atop the single-season record book after nailing a free position shot with 13 seconds remaining to beat the buzzer for her fourth goal. The goal marked her 44th of her senior campaign and pushed her past Natalie Smith's program record 78 points set in 1998.

Â
"It was a really cool moment," said Butler. "I was not aware of that record at the time, so it was really awesome to do that."
Â
Butler's record-breaking moment even drew praise from her senior counterpart McHugh, who pointed out how much dedication the senior midfielder has put in throughout their time together.
Â
"That was so awesome," said McHugh. "She's worked really hard these past four years and I've been with her for every step of the way to see it. She's been here for me as well, so I'm very happy for her and can't wait to see her accomplish more."
Â
Just 16 minutes later, McHugh joined Butler with 79 points after she received a pass in front of the goal from junior attacking teammate
Riley Dolan that led to her fifth score in the 44th minute. The Burke, Va. native then was on the receiving end of another Dolan assist when she found the net for her sixth goal to push her past Butler with 80 points on the year.
Â
After becoming the Lancers' top-point scorer in a single season, McHugh mentioned the team's focus to come up with a win to gain momentum heading into the final three games of the season as a big factor in reaching this milestone.

Â
"We wanted to come up with a big win today just because we knew could do that. We're going into a difficult next three games and we knew that coming up with a win like this would be good for us. It's a bit of a confidence boost as well heading into the weekend," she said.
Â
In spite of seeing her newly set record broken in the same game, Butler was just as proud to see her teammate McHugh put in another all-around performance on the attack to become the program's new single-season points leader.
Â
"She did an amazing job playing today as she always does," said Butler "Congratulations to her on achieving this. It's really neat that we're both so high on the single-season points list and I'm glad that she accomplished that."
Â
Also contributing to the high-scoring Lancer attack were senior
Shiloh McKenzie and sophomore
Madison Stair, who each netted a hat trick in the game. McKenzie tied Butler for the second most goals in the game with four while Stair netted three, each of which McHugh assisted on.
Â
"Today was a great opportunity for all of us to get involved on the attack. We had many different scorers break open and I just passed the ball to them, so they are really the ones who did the work tonight," said McHugh.
Â
The Lancers led from start to finish after posting their highest goal total in a half to take a 16-4 lead after the first 30 minutes of play. McHugh sparked the scoring surge with three goals and four assists in the period to go along with Butler's fourth goal on a free position shot right before the half.
Â
In addition to setting the single-season points record, McHugh pulled to within 13 points of becoming the all-time career points leader. As the game was winding down, McHugh set up sophomore
Charleigh Kondas for the Lancers' final goal of the night for her final point of the night.
Â
On the defensive end, Longwood's backline created extra opportunities for the attack throughout the game with a game-high 10 caused turnovers. Junior defender
Madelynn Rollins led all Lancers with four caused turnovers on the day.
Â
In turn, the Lancer attack turned the Highlanders' turnovers into scoring opportunities to finish with a 32-15 shot advantage on the night.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Imani West made three saves and scooped up one groundball in 43 minutes of action for Longwood to pick up fourth win of the season. She also guided a defense that held its opponent to single-digit goals for the sixth time this season.
Â
Longwood will now face another Big South test when it heads to Conway, S.C., to take on Coastal Carolina on Saturday, April 16. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
