HIGH POINT, N.C. – Carson Jackson drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning as High Point took the rubber match from Longwood, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Williard Stadium.
"We missed an opportunity to tie it up late and couldn't produce the big hit," Longwood head coach
Ryan Mau said. "The bullpen did a good job of keeping us around."
Andrew Gottfried (3-2) picked up the win for High Point by holding the Lancers to just one run in and spread five hits across 7.0 innings of work with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Cody Wager (2-1) took the loss for Longwood after allowing the winning run to score and allowed four hits with one strikeout in 2.0 innings of work. Tyler Britton got the final five outs of the game to nail down the save, his second of the season.
The Lancers got great hitting from seniors
C.J. Roth and
Connar Bastaich in the loss. Roth scored Longwood's lone run of the day and was 3-for-4 at the plate. Bastaich was 2-for-4 and hit an RBI single in the first inning, which gave Longwood a 1-0 lead.
"[Roth] had great at-bats all weekend," Mau said. "Unfortunately we weren't able to string much together offensively."
At the plate Roth had a strong series picking up multiple hits Friday and Sunday. The senior captain finished the series 5-for-12 with three runs scored.
The Lancers led until the third inning when High Point tied the game on an RBI single by Drew Fopeano. The game remain tied until the go-ahead single by Jackson in the seventh inning.
It was a tight game throughout and the Lancers got great defense to keep the game close. In the bottom of the second inning High Point center fielder Josh Greene hit a smash to the warning track in left field, but a diving catch by
Hayes Nelson took extra bases away and sparked a perfect frame for starter
Luke Simpson.
The junior right-hander, Simpson, received no decision in the game. Simpson pitched 4.2 innings of one-run ball and struck out a pair of batters in the loss.
"[Simpson] battled for us and escaped some jams," Mau said.
High Point's Clare continually got on base in the series. The junior had six hits in the series and scored three runs in the three games, picking up hits in each of the three games.
